So… Pulseaudio no longer works properly, it doesn’t start automatically on boot…
I’ve read it’s because Gentoo is migrating to PipeWire…

Ok… but PipeWire + WirePlumber don’t work properly either… instead, audio section is missing from KDE Settings and the volume icon in the KDE panel says “no Input or Output devices found.”

I’m not trying to migrate an existing Gentoo install to PipeWire, instead, I want to do a fresh install of Gentoo with PipeWire by default.

So now you are with pipewire or pulseaudio?
If the latter do you have both
Code:

media-sound/pulseaudio
media-sound/pulseaudio-daemon

installed?
Is media-sound/pulseaudio built with USE="daemon" ?
In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf try adding
Code:

daemonize = yes

Does it help?

please post the output of
Code:
emerge --info pipewire
emerge --info wireplumber

Code:
ps -A | grep -E 'pipewire|wireplumber'

is kde-plasma/kpipewire relevant?

Migration is not forced.
You probably missed this notice https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/blob/master/media-sound/pulseaudio-daemon/pulseaudio-daemon-16.1.ebuild#L368-L382
Just enable automatic startup in a way that suits you best following the instruction.

Do you use systemd? If so check the output of
Code:
systemctl --user status pipewire.service

I had an issue similar to yours, and the output of that contained something along the lines of not finding an xdg-portal. I fooled around with my system and it eventually fixed itself, but I don't know what it was that fixed it. I think it was restarting the necessary services, and logging out and then logging back in again.
