Anker USB ethernet does not DHCP

  • Quote

Post by grant123 » Mon Sep 19, 2022 11:01 pm

I have several different USB ethernet adapters and all work fine to DHCP from my ISP except for the Anker adapters. They work fine when manually specifying an IP for the LAN connection but when they try to DHCP from my ISP they set an IPv4LL address instead which doesn't work. I have 2 of these

and 1 of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CB1QNLT

and they all behave this way.

grant123,

What are the Vendor and Device IDs for these dongles. We need to know what is on the inside :)

Code: Select all

lsusb
should be enough.

dhcp messages are Ethernet packets, so it sounds a bit odd.

I wonder if you are hitting a timeout for some reason then your system gives up and helps itself to a link local address, which as you say is not useful.

Here's that info:

idVendor 0b95
idProduct 1790
bcdDevice 2.00

I'm using gentoo-kernel with default config.

I do see a lot of "Failed to read reg index" and "Failed to write reg index" messages associated with the adapter in dmesg.

grant123,

Those are AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet USB3 to Ethernet converters, like by router.

Code: Select all

pi_router ~ # lsusb
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet
They have a MaxPower 496mA, which is just 4mA under the USB2 root hub limit for all devices powered by the hub.

Please put the the output of

Code: Select all

lsusb -vvv
onto a pastebin, so that we can see your USB bus power arrangements.
Its possible that using different USB ports or a powered USB hub (to overcome the power limit) will fix it.

I would not be surprised to learn that the devices that work are USB2 to 100MBit/sec. I would expect them to use less power.
lsusb will show them as Fast Ethernet adaptors.

I'm using an Anker powered USB hub and the same USB port on it for the working adapters and for the Ankers. One of the working adapters is this one:

grant123,

What is its Vendor and Device ID?
What does lsusb -vvv say about its MaxPower?

Your entire

Code: Select all

lsusb -vvv
will still be interesting

It looks like they're actually the same for the working adapter:

idVendor 0b95
idProduct 1790

MaxPower is 496mA. I'd prefer not to dump the entire lsusb -vvv in here but happy to pick out what you need.

grant123,

All of

Code: Select all

lsusb -vvv
probably won't fit in a post, hence pastebin.
The output of

Code: Select all

lsusb.py
would do, if its still a thing.
It shows the device tree, the drivers and power requirements for every connected device.

That some devices work and some don't with the same Vendor and Device IDs does not rule out power.
Manufacturing tolerances mean that they are not all the same.
It does rule out USB quirks, since that uses Vendor and Device IDs for a lookup, to know which quirks to apply.

dmesg, showing the errors, on a pastebin would be good too.
