Hello

I have a strange problem.
pipewire package updated to 0.3.49 version.

Since this update, no sound when i login to gnome session.
I use pulseaudio, not pipewire.

The only method to have sound is kill pipewire process...

When i updated the system i see :

Code:
 * Messages for package media-video/pipewire-0.3.49-r1:

 * It is recommended to raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK to 256 for users
 * using PipeWire. Do it either manually or add yourself
 * to the 'audio' group:
 *
 *   usermod -aG audio <youruser>
 *
 * JACK emulation is incomplete and not all programs will work. PipeWire's
 * alternative libraries have been installed to a non-default location.
 * To use them, put pw-jack <application> before every JACK application.
 * When using pw-jack, do not run jackd/jackdbus. However, a virtual/jack
 * provider is still needed to compile the JACK applications themselves.
 *
 * PipeWire daemon startup has been moved to a launcher script!
 * Make sure that /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf either does not exist or no
 * longer is set to start a session manager or PulseAudio compatibility daemon (all
 * lines similar to '{ path = /usr/bin/pipewire*' should be commented out)
 *
 * Those manually starting /usr/bin/pipewire via .xinitrc or similar _must_ from
 * now on start /usr/bin/gentoo-pipewire-launcher instead! It is highly
 * advised that a D-Bus user session is set up before starting the script.
 *
 * This ebuild auto-enables PulseAudio replacement. Because of that, users
 * are recommended to edit: /etc/pulse/client.conf and disable
 * autospawning of the original daemon by setting:
 *
 *   autospawn = no
 *
 * Please note that the semicolon (;) must _NOT_ be at the beginning of the line!
 *
 * Alternatively, if replacing PulseAudio daemon is not desired, edit
 * /usr/bin/gentoo-pipewire-launcher by commenting out the relevant
 * command:
 *
 * #/usr/bin/pipewire -c pipewire-pulse.conf &
 *
 * NOTE:
 * Starting with PipeWire-0.3.30, this package is no longer installing its config
 * into /etc/pipewire by default. In case you need to change
 * its config, please start by copying default config from /usr/share/pipewire
 * and just override the sections you want to change.
 *
 * For latest tips and tricks, troubleshooting information and documentation
 * in general, please refer to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PipeWire

How can i keep pulseaudio and DO NOT USE this pipewire ?

Note i use GNOME on Xorg

Since you are using openrc, as notes say there is only one option - edit /usr/bin/gentoo-pipewire-launcher as instructed. Maybe just adding 'exit 0' on second line would be enough.

Trying the tip, copy pipewire-pulse.conf to .config/pipewire/pipewire-pulse.conf and make changes to

Code:

Rebooting and .... Recording a video => sound crackling when i speak with my microphone.

Conclusion => PIPEWIRE IS A BIG MESS

This morning, switched again on Pipewire.

Recording the mic (USB) from Audacity : OK
Recording the mic with OBS : CRACKLING mic but audio from internal sound card fine....
Adding 10 ms of latency in Pulseaudio for the USB mic : CRACKLING but audio from internal sound card fine....
Rebuild OBS with pipewire flag : CRACKLING but audio from internal sound card fine....
Purge all config of OBS and create again all my sound channels : Seems to be okay

I will check that more than once and if it will be okay i will say here "solved"

Code:
Audio:
  Device-1: AMD Baffin HDMI/DP Audio [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560/560X]
    driver: snd_hda_intel
  Device-2: AMD Family 17h HD Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
  Device-3: C-Media BIRD UM1 type: USB
    driver: hid-generic,snd-usb-audio,usbhid
  Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.10.109-gentoo-adrien running: yes
  Sound Server-2: PipeWire v: 0.3.49 running: yes

Clean profile of OBS : Now all is okay.

So cleaning OBS profile solve the issue.

BUT : Pipewire script works fine ONLY if MANUALLY we set autospawn to no !!!!!!

If you are using cpu-driven USB ports, make sure you have the latest system firmware applied, as Ryzen USB issue is kind of well known. This issue could cause jitter to USB data streams that is big enough to make sound crackling.

Or maybe try any other USB port which is not driven by CPU.

So I've been looking as this topic and the bug for two weeks now. I have masked the version of pipewire for now. As I was having the same issue, and did not want to kill pipewire everytime, or manually alter the pulseaudio autospawning.

I can see the bug is unconfirmed. Is it a pipewire bug or a pulseaudio package bug? Is there something I can do to help this solved, like confirming something? Or is this already in the process of being solved. Or even: is it already solved, but am I unaware because of the mask ;) ?

Edit: from the other thread I understand that I missed the update notice of the pipewire package 0.3.49-r1. So I unmasked this version and installed it. And indeed, there is very clear and helpfull information there. Whoops :) Sorry for missing that.

there is a file /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/enable-autospawn.conf which enable autospawn..........

Code:
equery b /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/enable-autospawn.conf
 * Searching for /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/enable-autospawn.conf ...
media-sound/pulseaudio-daemon-16.0-r1 (/etc/pulse/client.conf.d/enable-autospawn.conf)

With pulseaudio-daemon-16.1 on openrc (that is, USE -systemd applies) autospawn is enabled automatically via /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/enable-autospawn.conf

It's very curious because i don't change configuration, just update the system.
I will test install a gentoo + gnome from scratch to see how it's configured

Yes, the problem is :

Choice 1 : Activate pipewire
Choice 2 : Activate Pulseaudio.

The news is very verbose BUT :
- I enabled the USE pulseaudio : if i want use pipewire or pulseaudio, the USE must be enabled for both choices ? or only for pulseaudio and pipwire require disabling pulseaudio USE ?
