Hi!

Just installed gnome-light 42, and the rest of the company.

However GDM does not provide an entry to select Gnome wayland session, so it only starts under X11. (There's also no entry for plasma wayland, just for X11).

There are a few threads on the internet about it, but: I don't use nvidia (I have an amd gpu), did the `ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules` trick, but it didn't help. I was running gnome on wayland a few months ago, and plasma wayland runs fine. In fact, ssdm is able (after a few little problems) to launch gnome wayland.

Any ideas?

did you restart after the change?

i'am not even sure if this will work, but try this patch: http://dpaste.com/GSXAYS8F2

save it what_ever-you-name-it.patch and copy to /etc/portage/patches/gnome-base/gdm and re-emerge gdm

and also this from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1968929

A gear button should appear in the lower right of the screen.

EDIT: testing it myself is impossible:

Code:
emerge -va --usepkg=n gdm
Total: 120 packages (113 new, 6 in new slots, 1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 545.300 KiB

for one package 8O

greetings

Hi CooSee.

Thanks, tried the patch, but didn't change something. Yes, I did restart and did so as well after deleting 61-gdm.rules.

The gear icon contains only entries from xsession, not wayland-session.

Code:
set "WaylandEnable=true" in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

have you tried this?

From reading around, it might be that GDM fails to start in wayland, and thus only lists xsessions...

I tried to enable debug for GDM and did notice it tried to start under wayland, but eventually started under X... Needs more investigation...

I had this kind of problems when I used genkernel. Try using one of the distribution kernels and if it solves the problem, and if you still want a custom kernel, either provide gentoo-kernel with your custom config as described on the wiki or use dracut to manually create the initramfs.

Regards,
Georgi

Turns out.. my /tmp folder had the wrong permissions, it was under my local username instead of root...

Mutter has a check for "sane" permissions of /tmp/.X11-unix and this is why it failed. Since gdm uses gnome-shell to render, and gnome-shell failed because of this permission check, it started under Xorg which doesn't list the wayland entries.
