please note that the gentoo server does not seem to provide a way to upload pictures directly to it thus the reason I link them onto my website...

one of the concerns of username234 was being able to sign in via putty when the system was halted here is the reaction to that:

http://videotron.eu/gentoo/signingon1.png
http://videotron.eu/gentoo/signingon.png

the error is as follows:

start screen as such :
http://videotron.eu/gentoo/VirtualBox_gentoo1_29_07_2022_10_37_31.png

then after...

http://videotron.eu/gentoo/VirtualBox_gentoo1_29_07_2022_10_41_16.png

then it freezes ...
I force restart and boot by cd rom as such...

Needs the following set in the kernel and their dependencies:

CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m (or =y is OK too)
CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX_FBCON=y

it was done earlier actually now it's freezing after no memory disk .. I did a lot of guess work out of frustration I think I removed wireless lan without considering if it needed one for the virtual box... but nothing is making it load and it's sort of frustrating and hopeless this thing...

sixpiece,

As grknight, says, you are missing support for the emulated GPU.
To post lots of text, wgetpaste is your friend. You will need to emerge it.

no it's not working now... I'll try to understand it a little bit better...

# zcat /proc/config.gz

ok with this file how do I for example know what each value corresponds to? both is there somewhere a description? #1 , #2 how do I correlate it to source code? # 3 how do I set the value to be what it should be?

I mean I presume I have to do this to get this operating system installed... I thought it would be possible with minimum knowledge on the os to just make a sucessful build have it work and fine tune it from there. Do I have to open new threads so that this post continues to get attention?

it does not appear to just be the graphics card not working and the rest because ssh does not work. this was something brought up in irc..

<ormaaj> it's kind of hard to mess up your kernel build with your option selection. If you forget to build a module or something you'll just be missing whatever function it was, but usually it'll boot. The livecd kernels are known-good ones that you can use as backup.
<ormaaj> just get it booting and refine the details over time. genkernel isn't needed.
<sixpiece> so what do I do?
<sixpiece> to get it to boot?
<ormaaj> install stages, configure kernel, install grub, done. those are the steps. If you're going through the kernel config for the first time it'll take you a while but it's not important to understand everything and get it perfect.
<sixpiece> well that's what I thought and I did all this
<sixpiece> but it does not work
<kurly> i still don't understand why we aren't using a known good kernel (aka gentoo-kernel-bin) -- is there something non-suitable in it?
<kurly> emerge -av gentoo-kernel-bin
<sheep> I sometimes ssh from windows terminal but I hadn't seen that issue before
<sixpiece> it's not clear to me that it's the issue since the command you gave me didn't have --ask in it it -av
<sixpiece> it was -av I mean
<kurly> yes because i got tired of your keyboard not working
<sixpiece> but I just copied and pasted
<kurly> you can use --ask --verbose if you really want
<sixpiece> ic
<sixpiece> ok that finished
<kurly> what is the output of: grep -rsin installkernel /etc/portage
<kurly> hoping for a single line
<kurly> ...assuming you were trying the things i suggested the other day; it was really hard to tell
<sixpiece> out put is/etc/portage/package.use/00kurly:1:sys-kernel/installkernel-gentoo grub
<kurly> and the output of: wgetpaste -ic 'emerge -pvuDU @world'
<sixpiece> http://dpaste.com/2Y4H7RFDM
<kurly> does 'mount |grep /boot' show one line or no lines?
<sixpiece> one line because you told me to mount it
<kurly> wgetpaste -c 'ls -l /boot'
<sixpiece> http://dpaste.com/8VQKN38MJ
<kurly> wgetpaste /boot/grub/grub.cfg
<sixpiece> http://dpaste.com/EMMW3EPG4
<kurly> okay when you reboot to grub, you may need to go to advanced, and you want to boot from: Gentoo GNU/Linux, with Linux 5.15.52-gentoo-dist
<sixpiece> there aren't that many options normally but I will try
<sixpiece> it worked
<sixpiece> lol
<sixpiece> thank you kurly
<kurly> you can get rid of the other entries by removing them from /boot and rerunning grub-mkconfig
<kurly> you can install whatever you'd like; remember what i said earlier: make it work, then make it yours
<sixpiece> what was the issue?
<kurly> what issue? the not booting issue?
<kurly> your kernel config was missing ... something.
<sixpiece> interesting what was it missing?
<kurly> compare the working one to the non-working one; it's something in that diff ;)
<sixpiece> ok lol
<sixpiece> I'm scared of deleting the working one now lol
<kurly> why would you delete the working one?
<kurly> you can delete System.map-5.15.52-gentoo yes
<sixpiece> config-5.15.52-gentoo System.map-5.15.52-gentoo-x86_64
<sixpiece> like those also just keep the gentoo-dist
<kurly> yes
<kurly> did you regenerate grub.cfg?
<sixpiece> and it's working
<sixpiece> thank you

here is a link to the wgetpastes on my website:

https://videotron.eu/gentoo/working/ there's 3 files...

Thank you to everyone in the forum and in irc for helping me get a working installation so I can start my journey on gentoo...
