Hello,
I recently observed that the fan is always on full speed on my notebook.
Using top I found that some wpa_supplicant process eats all the time
about 18-25% of CPUs capacity on
4core i7-8650U CPU @ 1.90GHz with hyperthreading enabled.
Network monitor reports constant outgoing traffic
about 10KiB/s when nothing is running.
I have:
Code: | net-wireless/wpa_supplicant-2.10-r1::gentoo USE="crda dbus fils hs2-0 mbo mesh qt5 readline tkip -ap -broadcom-sta -eap-sim -eapol-test -fasteap -macsec -p2p -privsep (-ps3) (-selinux) -smartcard -tdls -uncommon-eap-types -wep (-wimax) -wps"
|
Code: | net-misc/networkmanager-1.38.2::gentoo USE="bluetooth concheck dhclient elogind gtk-doc introspection modemmanager nss policykit ppp tools vala wext wifi -audit -connection-sharing -debug -dhcpcd -gnutls -iptables -iwd -libedit -lto -nftables -ofono -ovs -psl -resolvconf (-selinux) -syslog -systemd -teamd -test"
|
Code: | uname -a
Linux pvn 5.15.52-gentoo #1 SMP Sun Jul 10 10:44:20 CEST 2022 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8650U CPU @ 1.90GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Any idea what might be the cause?
Thank you.

Plz disable wpa_supplicant.
If needed it will be invoked by network-manager.
Now there is a race condition between them,
If you have also netifrc either remove it or disable all net.<iface> files.
What is output of

As a point of reference, I avoid NetworkManager like the plague. I apparently use net-misc/netifrc (I've never had to worry about it).
Code: | [ebuild R ] net-wireless/wpa_supplicant-2.10-r1::gentoo USE="crda fils hs2-0 mbo mesh readline -ap -broadcom-sta -dbus -eap-sim -eapol-test -fasteap -macsec -p2p -privsep (-ps3) -qt5 (-selinux) -smartcard -tdls -tkip -uncommon-eap-types -wep (-wimax) -wps" 0 KiB |
wpa_supplicant is currently using 0.0% CPU
You don't mention if this is a new configuration or if updates have happened, or if nothing has changed and the problem appeared seemingly without cause.
Not long ago, wpa_supplicant was changed to disable TKIP by default. I believe the common failure after that is for wpa_supplicant to fail to start until its configuration is adjusted (or USE flags are changed to re-enable TKIP). I wouldn't guess that is related, but who knows. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

It seems that it occurs randomly.
When it occurs, restart does not help.
Now I booted when it is cool and it behaves OK.
I suspect something may be wrong with the wifi card.
May be it occurs when the notebook become too hot.
Code: |
rc-update
NetworkManager | default
binfmt | boot
bluetooth | default
bootmisc | boot
cgroups | sysinit

So I will try to remove wpa_supplicant from the list. Hopefully it will help.

I removed wpa_supplicant from the default run level and it works well.
%Cpu(s): 0.9 us, fan off.
Quite unusual state.
Thank you,
Petr |
