PostPosted: Sat Jul 02, 2022 8:03 am    Post subject: Problem to found a specific WIFI Reply with quote

Hello, yesterday I moved to a new flat, in a friend house. They gave me all wifi details to connect. But strangely, I can't find this WIFI on my desktop with NetworkManager (the others connections are visible)

The thing very strange is, with my iPhone, the signal is perfect with this WIFI and visible. And if I try to connect to this WIFI with wpa_supplicant, wpa_supplicant can see the WIFI, but not able to connect to(when I start the connection, I have a message : not found)

The wifi I tried to connect to is VM0390860

Fulgurance,

tkip is broken.
The correct fix is change the WAP to not use tkip, if that's possible.

According to Wikipedia: TKIP, TKIP is insecure and deprecated as of 2012. Earlier this year, Gentoo changed the default not to include tkip support on wpa_supplicant, which caused a large number of threads from users who had never updated their wireless access point (WAP) to use a more secure protocol. Neddy suggested, and I agree, that you should instead change the wireless access point to offer a secure protocol, rather than forcing the client to use an insecure protocol.

Okay. The problem is, I'm renting a bedroom and I'm not the wifi owner...

Well, I recall is was partially vulnerable to attacks designed for WEP. I wouldn't be surprised if some other attacks were invented too, so yes, it probably is not very secure.
Still, the primary defense is usually implemented in the application layer as SSL. I mean, if your connection is not secure at the application level, you should not consider it secure, though a VPN _may_ be used as an effective workaround if certain conditions are met.

Wifi encryption has IMO little impact.
Even though an open wifi requires no skill to snoop on, it's short range makes such activity relatively expensive. Imagine how much more data you could collect at ISP's router... It may be more difficult to pull off, but a truly malicious agent would have enough resources to do that and the ROI would be absolutely insane.
