No sound after alsa installation... I completely lost in how to determine my audio card and what driver is required for it.

Code:

Or Realtek?

I will appreciate if some one will help me in understanding what is going on here... THanks

Blackmorse,

Code:
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
builds the PCI interface part of the driver into the kernel.

Code:
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_ANALOG=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SIGMATEL=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_VIA=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CIRRUS=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CS8409=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CONEXANT=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0110=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0132=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0132_DSP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CMEDIA=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SI3054=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=m
builds all the codecs as loadable modules.

All the bits of the driver need to be available at the time CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL initialises. That's before root is mounted, so modules cannot be loaded.
All =y works and all =m. Mixing Y and M fails by design.

As you didn't show your
Code:
lspi -nnk
we can't be sure which flavour of SND_HDA_INTEL you have, the older more common one, that you shared your kernel config snippet for or the newer one that uses Sound Open Firmware (SoF). Thats a different set of kernel config options.

Your wifi is configured suboptimally.
Code:
[    0.501963] Loading firmware: regulatory.db
[    0.502425] platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error -2
Its a similar thing.
The firmware is on the root filesystem buf the kernel module that needs it is built in.

CONFIG_SND_HDA_DSP_LOADER=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_COMPONENT=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE=0

Please do not mix =y and =m between HDA_INTEL and HDA_CODEC options. Make them all modules or all built-in.

Your dmesg says that hda-intel gave up and then later something fell back to generic instead of the correct codec.

Fix this in your kernel config.

I've changed this to m, and now I can't even see a sound card

Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

Code:
aplay --list-devices
aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found...

Sorry for forgetting to include this:

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i audio
05:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Renoir Radeon High Definition Audio Controller [1002:1637]
        Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Renoir Radeon High Definition Audio Controller [1025:1524]
05:00.5 Multimedia controller [0480]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor [1022:15e2] (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor [1025:1524]
05:00.6 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 17h/19h HD Audio Controller [1022:15e3]
        Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Family 17h/19h HD Audio Controller [1025:1524]

btw,
Code:

Your wifi is configured suboptimally.

I use wi-fi as a module, because otherwise It didn't work...

Blackmorse,

That's three sound devices you have.

Code:
05:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Renoir Radeon High Definition Audio Controller [1002:1637]
05:00.6 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 17h/19h HD Audio Controller [1022:15e3]
both use
Code:
CONFIG_SND
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL
...
and friends.

As you don't have any sound cards detected does your lsmod output include snd_hda_intel ?
If not, what does
Code:
modprobe snd-hda-intel
do?
It may make those two devices show up, or there may be some error messages at the end of dmesg.

Your
Code:
05:00.5 Multimedia controller [0480]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor [1022:15e2] (rev 01)
needs
Code:
CONFIG_SND
CONFIG_SND_SOC
CONFIG_SND_SOC_SOF_AMD_RENOIR
CONFIG_SND_SOC_SOF_AMD_TOPLEVEL
or something like that.
See Device 'AMD ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor'
Notice that different kernels need different options.
I think that has all its own codec options too.

When you are searching in the kernel for things, Configuring the kernel may be useful.

You will also need sys-firmware/sof-firmware.

Your wifi is configured suboptimally because dmesg says
Code:
[    0.502425] platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error -2

That's a database of permitted channels and transmit powers in the various regulatory regions of the world.
When its missing, your channel selection and Tx power will be limited.

Either build that regulatory.db file into the kernel or make whatever loads it a module.
Its not your chipset driver. Its common to all Wifi.

Yep, sorry, forget to add snd_hda_intel to /etc/modules-load.d . After that

Code:

snd_ctl_led            24576  0
snd_hda_codec_realtek   155648  1

snd_hwdep              16384  1 snd_hda_codec
snd_hda_core          102400  5 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek

But still I can get no sound: kde do not see any audio devices

Code:

aplay --list-devices

  Subdevices: 1/1

And playing mp3 file with aplay just gives me noise :(

I filled up /etc/asound.conf according to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA#.7E.2F.asoundrc:

Code:

Blackmorse,

As SND_SOC is compiled into the kernel, how will it load its firmware?
The firmware has to be available before root is mounted, when the built in code initialises.
You need to build the firmware in too.
I suspect you will have firmware loading errors in dmesg.
That Generic codec is wrong.

Did you
Code:
emerge sys-firmware/sof-firmware
to get the firmware?

Please don't post greps of things. Put whole logs onto a pastebin site with wgetpaste.
Likewise your kernel config file.

When things don't work, what is there is often valuable.
What is not there but should be is probably more valuable still. We need whole unfiltered files to see what's missing.

I completely lost in this firmware... snd_hda_intel module is succesfully loaded after the boot, but my card corresponds to soc_sof_amd ?
