EDIT: likely many other wireless cards may have a problem like this. Solution is at the end of this thread.

I have a problem that my wireless does not start on dell latitude E6540.

When i start it, here is what i get:
Quote:

sudo /etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0 restart
* Bringing down interface wlp3s0
* Stopping wpa_cli on wlp3s0 ... [ ok ]
* Stopping wpa_supplicant on wlp3s0 ... [ ok ]
* Bringing up interface wlp3s0
* Starting wpa_supplicant on wlp3s0 ...
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant [ ok ]
* Starting wpa_cli on wlp3s0 ... [ ok ]
* Backgrounding ... ...
* WARNING: net.wlp3s0 has started, but is inactive

Interesting is that the above intel card seems to work by itself as iwlist works since i can run as a root the following.
Code:

 iwlist scan

I believe i followed gentoo wiki page to configure my kernel.

Please advise on what should i do to initiate the wireless.

The following could be useful.
Code:

 dmesg|grep iwlwif

The kernel .config is a bit too big, i don't know how to post it.

ngorelen,

wgetpaste is your friend.

It is used to put files and command output onto a pastebin site. You tell us the link you get back.
Helpers know to quote the interesting bits, as pastes like that don't have a very long life.

-- edit --

Code:
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUG enabled
is permitted to interfere with normal operation to be able to provide debug output.
I don't know if it does here but DEBUG options are best set to off unless you know you need them.

Thnak you NeddySeagoon,

wgetpaste is my friend indeed!

Here is the address for the content of .config:
https://dpaste.com/6JF47BT4T to expire in ~1day from now.

In addition, I followed your suggestion as well as i got rid of unnecessary wireless cards but still got the same:
Code:

WARNING: net.wlp3s0 has started, but is inactive

after i attempt to start the wireless.

ngorelen,

After that warning, what is in dmesg?
Put it all into a pastebin please.
Its just a warning, it does not mean that its not working, it may just be slow to start.

Code:
#
# Debugging Options
#
# CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEVICE_TRACING=y
# end of Debugging Options

That WLWIFI_DEVICE_TRACING=y would make me nervous but lets see dmesg before you rebuild your kernel again.

Hi NeddySeagoon,

here is the link to dmesg: http://dpaste.com/46DSRD26F

Yes, you are right given that iwlist works the card is working.
It is that the wireless does not start.

ngorelen,

I was expecting to see some attempts by your wifi to associate and authenticae with your access point.
There is nothing. Like wpa_supplicant was not asked to do anything.

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0 restart
looks correct.

What do you have in your /etc/conf.d/net file?
Look at it before you post it. There can be usernames and passwords there.
You should redact them :)

What does
Code:
rc-update show --verbose
output ?

Thanks again for looking into this problem.

My /etc/conf.d/net file is:

rc-update show -v gives:

ngorelen,

We need to rewind a little.

Do you intend to use WiFi sometimes and Wired sometimes or both together to join different networks?
The answer matters for several reasons.

1. The net service can be considered up either when all interfaces are up, which in the default)
2. When any one interface is up.

That matters to things that need net. They won't work until the network service is up, even if you have a working network.
Read the comments in
Code:
/etc/rc.conf
and edit if if you need to.

The brackets in
Code:
config_eno1=("dhcp")
config_wlp3s0=("dhcp")
are not required.
If you do get both interfaces up together, you are in danger of the system not working. Its OK if they have different metrics.
The interface with the lowest metric will be used.

So far' there is nothing wrong.
What does
Code:
ls -l /etc/wpa_supplicant
show. Its picky about file permissions and will not work if they are too permissive.
What is in wpa_supplicant.conf ?
Redact your SSID and Pass Phrase.

-- edit --

What does
Code:
uname -a
return.

NeddySeagoon,
I need primarily WiFi to work, I am using eth0 for now as the WiFi does not work.

/etc/rc.conf has just a few working statements:
Quote:

rc_shell=/sbin/sulogin
unicode="YES"
rc_tty_number=12

all other lines are commented.

Further:
Code:

ls -trl /etc/wpa_supplicant/
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1284 апр 12 15:35 wpa_cli.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3644 апр 16 17:24 wpa_supplicant.conf

the wpa_supplicant.conf is
Code:

#
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1

fast_reauth=1

# Plaintext connection (no WPA, no IEEE 802.1X)
network={
        ssid="..."
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        psk="..."
        priority=5
}

uname -a returns:
Code:

Linux ngorelen-lt 5.15.26-gentoo #2 SMP Sat Apr 23 15:09:16 EDT 2022 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

ngorelen,

For now, in /etc/rc.conf, under the text
Code:
# Do we allow any started service in the runlevel to satisfy the dependency
# or do we want all of them regardless of state? For example, if net.eth0
# and net.eth1 are in the default runlevel then with rc_depend_strict="NO"
# both will be started, but services that depend on 'net' will work if either
# one comes up. With rc_depend_strict="YES" we would require them both to
# come up.
#rc_depend_strict="YES"

add the line
Code:
rc_depend_strict="NO"[
so that networking will work if any interface is up

Code:
ls -trl /etc/wpa_supplicant/
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1284 апр 12 15:35 wpa_cli.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3644 апр 16 17:24 wpa_supplicant.conf

wpa_supplicant.conf should only be readable by root. Anyone with access to your system can read it and steal your network credentials.
Many/most security related packages don't work if the permissions on files holding secrets are too lax.
Code:
chmod 600 /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Now only root can read it. That's safe.

wpa_supplicant.con:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
looks old. /var/run/ should by a symbolic link to /run on your system.
Is it?
If not, rewove the /var from the front of the path name.

After you have changed wpa_supplicant.conf, reboot.
Code:
wpa_cli reconfigure
will load the new configuration but that's only useful if its already loaded and we don't know that.

Hello NeddySeagoon,
i implemented those suggestions as well, rebooted and no change...

I'll stick with the ethernet for the time being.

Thank you for suggestions.

ngorelen,

Code:
[ 8540.610598] wlp3s0: authenticate with aa:db:48:82:69:e1
[ 8540.613708] wlp3s0: send auth to aa:db:48:82:69:e1 (try 1/3)
[ 8540.802334] wlp3s0: send auth to aa:db:48:82:69:e1 (try 2/3)
[ 8540.811164] wlp3s0: send auth to aa:db:48:82:69:e1 (try 3/3)
[ 8540.820216] wlp3s0: authentication with aa:db:48:82:69:e1 timed out

That's wpa_supplicant doing its thing now.
You have another problem, like is the transmitter on?

Code:
rfkll
can help there.

Yes, that was the first thing i checked on this laptop. The wireless is active, i double checking it with MS window since
the laptop has two systems.
But then, i am getting
Code:
 net.wlp3s0 has started, but is inactive

in both, on/off cases of that switch.

NeddySeagoon,
i was thinking that using a usb wireless card could be a possibility.
And I was trying to follow wiki but iwlwifi scripts are hard to override.
It always comes first when i do
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0 restart

Do you know of perhaps more meaningful howto?
I have at the moment a realtek usb card for which a kernel module
realtek/rtl8xxxu/rtl8xxxu.ko exist.

ngorelen,

Code:
rm /etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0

With that symlink gone, wlp3s0 will not start.

Remove it from the net file too.

Why not let wpa_supplicant and dhclient do their jobs separately? First authentificate and when sure it's done use dhclient to configure the interface. Is this interface can work in a way or an other?

phew: /fyo͞o/ exclamationinformal : expressing a strong reaction of relief.

Thank you to all who participated in resolving this problem.
I just have found that it can be resolved following this thread

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8695745.html?sid=

Please read it where this (recent) problem is discussed in details.
But if you don't want to read it, the solution (one of them) is simple, just reemerge "USE="tkip" emerge -v1p wpa_supplicant",
and start it with: sudo /etc/init.d/net.wlp3s0 restart

iwlwifi works again!!!

Note that enabling TKIP should only be needed if your wireless access point is improperly offering only the insecure TKIP protocol, instead of something more modern and (for wireless) comparably better secured.

ngorelen,

Don't do it quite like
Code:
USE="tkip" emerge -v1p wpa_supplicant
that would work once but portage would not remember the USE="tkip" for you.
That's what /etc/portage/package.use/* is for.
