KDE's "Log Out" now no longer stops the window system. I don't know when this change happend, but "log out" now restarts the window system (which indeed is a good thing). But now there seems to be no way to exit KDE entirely. At least not using the KDE menu.
It used to be <ctrl>-<alt>-<backspace> would terminate the window system with prejudice. Which was very nice when desktop managers and applications had a tendency to freeze up. But it was also good for getting out of X entirely. Well, that was a long time ago.
So how do we who use startx get it to stop now?
Cheers,
Jon.

Solved. If you use the "Log out" from the <ctrl>-<alt>-<delete> menu (identical logo too), then it has the correct effect of actually halting the window system. |

Gentoo KDE Wiki provides instructions how to properly use startx. If you can''t log out regularly, you will have other issues too. |

Yes, startx has been working for me reliably for some time. The behavior of KDE has changed. It does what it's supposed to if you log out using the three finger salute. It restarts the window system if you try to log out from the KDE start button. That's probably not what's intended. Or rather, it works for the 99% of people who use kdm which I do not. It would be cool if that button said "restart KDE" and you could also "shut down kde. But of course these days people equate the window system with the operating system a la mac and windows, so the distinction is meaningless.
Thanks very much!
Cheers,
Jon |

You didn't listen, and KDM is not a thing for many years now. |

Posting to confirm, the gentoo xorg wiki page only takes you as far as verifying that xorg works using twm, and gives a simple example using fvwm. But it doesn't give any other advice.
Code: |
jesnow@bartali ~ $ cat .xinitrc
exec dbus-launch startplasma-x11
|
This appears to me to be correct unless something dramatic has changed and nobody told me (always a possibility around here). I didn't notice the change from kdm to sddm because I use startx.
This issue is not about xorg, but about kde-plasma, which still doesn't log out and stop X when I log out from the start button, but instead restarts the window manager. If you use the three-finger salute and then "logout" it does the right thing. After a while. I haven't had any other issues with kde, xorg or anything other than that since December, when I first noticed this. I suspect very strongly that both do the same thing if you're using a login manager, so that nobody noticed.
Cheers,
Jon. |

You looked at the wrong wiki:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#Starting_Plasma
shows:
Code: | ~/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session startplasma-x11 |

Not sure of the purpose of opening threads for help and then ignoring answers. |
