Scanner doesn't work anymore as regular user

Post by mahdi1234 » Sun Feb 27, 2022 10:03 pm

Hi,

I'm using my Epson 4490 Photo for like 15 years and all of sudden (worked two weeks ago), I cannot run it as regular user only as root (same both Vuescan and sane).

Code: Select all

$ sane-find-scanner
...
could not open USB device 0x04b8/0x0119 at 001:111: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

Code: Select all

# sane-find-scanner
...
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0119 [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:111
Any idea what changed?

Code: Select all

media-gfx/sane-backends-1.1.1-r2
media-gfx/iscan-2.30.4.2-r1
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-gt-x770-2.1.2.1-r3

I was already part of scanner group, so unfortunately that doesn't help.

You would be in a better position to answer that. What has changed on the system in the last two weeks? Package updates? Configuration changes? Kernel update?

If you can't find anything that way, what does strace say about the good and bad cases? What call fails for the unprivileged user, but succeeds for the privileged user?

May be related to bug 644636.

Did you update anything related to scanning?

Code: Select all

$ ls -ltr /var/log/portage | grep sane
We appear to have the same sane-backends, iscan, and iscan-plugins. My Epson Perfection V500 Photo continues to work as always. Maybe add "usb 0x04b8 0x0119" to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf if it's not already there? If it is, maybe comment it out? What happens if you start /etc/init.d/saned before sane-find-scanner? (Shouldn't be necessary.)

Tried commenting out, starting service, putting back etc nothing helped

Interesting, I figured so far then when I change in /lib/udev/rules.d/99-iscan.rules

Code: Select all

ENV{libsane_matched}=="yes", MODE="664", GROUP="scanner"
to

Code: Select all

ENV{libsane_matched}=="yes", MODE="777", GROUP="scanner"
it works under normal user, but I don't think this is really good solution.
