Hi,

emerge -DauUN world wants to re-emerge libreoffice
[ebuild R ] app-office/libreoffice-7.1.7.2 ELIBC="(-FreeBSD%)"

But it always fails. I disabled ccache, distcc, and MAKEOPTS="-j1" but nothing better.
I have 4Gb RAM, 12Gb swap and 12G disk space.
I don't know what to try, except using binary package (that I would rather avoid).

Is swap a separate partition? Is there clutter from past failures in /var/tmp/portage? You may just be running out of space. Can you put /var/tmp/portage somewhere else (another partition, external drive) with more free space?

Share output from "emerge --info libreoffice"

Honestly, I wonder if it's useful

Now, I have the same problem on my own PC, with RAM 32G and 35G disk space.

with app-office/libreoffice-7.2.5.2

Code:
18:34:01 root@coffee ~ # LANG=C free -g
               total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:              31           4          16           0          11          26
Swap:             32           0          32
18:34:22 root@coffee ~ # LANG=C df
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/root       197G  160G   35G  83% /

I guess it's not disk space. I also upgraded to libreoffice-7.2.5.2 today, but with no issues. I only have half of your RAM and used -j8. Very interesting.

So, may be some USE flag ?

Code:
[ebuild     U  ] app-office/libreoffice-7.2.5.2::gentoo [7.1.7.2::gentoo] USE="branding cups dbus googledrive gtk java ldap mariadb pdfimport -accessibility (-base) -bluetooth -clang (-coinmp) -custom-cflags -debug -eds (-firebird) -gstreamer -kde -odk -postgres -test -vulkan" LIBREOFFICE_EXTENSIONS="-nlpsolver -scripting-beanshell -scripting-javascript -wiki-publisher" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_9 -python3_8 -python3_10" 0 KiB

Maybe. There are some differences. Here is what I build:
Code:
[ebuild   R    ] app-office/libreoffice-7.2.5.2::gentoo  USE="branding cups dbus gtk mariadb pdfimport -accessibility (-base) -bluetooth -clang (-coinmp) -custom-cflags -debug -eds (-firebird) -googledrive -gstreamer -java -kde -ldap -odk -postgres -test -vulkan" LIBREOFFICE_EXTENSIONS="-nlpsolver -scripting-beanshell -scripting-javascript -wiki-publisher" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_9 -python3_8 -python3_10"

The only USE flag I change in package.use is +pdfimport.

My make.conf flags are:
Code:
USE="dv elogind gimp heif nas oss postscript tcpd v4l zstd -bluetooth -gnome -ipv6 -kde -pulseaudio -samba -systemd linguas_en linguas_en_US"

I tried disabling some USE, but not better.

I'm now trying with :
Code:
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_10" emerge libreoffice

And no error for the moment :
Code:
$ genlop -c

 Currently merging 1 out of 1

 * app-office/libreoffice-7.2.5.2

       current merge time: 24 minutes and 10 seconds.
       ETA: 19 minutes and 38 seconds.

Wait & see...

But, how do you select python now ? There is no more "eselect python"

I don't select PYTHON anywhere. I'm using bog standard defaults for amd64 stable. But, I do HAVE eselect-python. When it was no longer standard, I added it.
Code:
$ eselect python list
Available Python interpreters, in order of preference:
  [1]   python3.9
  [2]   python3.10 (fallback)

I don't use it, I just keep it for old-time sake. It lets me look.
Code:
app-eselect/eselect-python

The compilation finally ended well with python3_10.

I guess they have good reason for removing eselect-python by default.
So I used /etc/portage/env/python3_10.conf
Code:
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_10"
for app-office/libreoffice

Thank you for your help.

If anyone wants to add a further explanation, please feel free to do so.

Amazing. Update your bug report. I wonder what the bug people think about this?

Frautoincnam,

eselect python does not manage python versions for software installed by portage
python-exec does that. Its a wrapper around all portage installed python packages.

eselect python used to set the order in which the various installed python slots would be offered to non portage installed python things.

Thanks for these informations.
Although I'm not sure I understand everything.
In my case, I don't select any particular version of python because I don't see the point of it, what should I have done to solve my problem and compile libreoffice with python3-10 in this case?

If PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET is not set in package.use, then profile default is used which is currently 3.9.

Yes, and libreoffice doesn't compile, for me, on 3 PC/gentoo.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but since we do not have dozens of bugs reported about LO not building for months (this would have been the case for lots of users by now, and we do not have other segfaults reported like that - and after all, 3.9 is what was used for creating libreoffice-bin as well), I am assuming there is no 'global' problem here.

I'm quite sure you're right. That's not what I meant either.
I just want to say that it's not installation specific, it's common to several of my systems, and so there is a more general reason in my installations that I have the problem everywhere.
My comments were mainly made to spur research leads from those who master the subject, which is not my case.

My recent update to same version required me to use -j1, which succeeded. I usually run at -j8. I tried -j4, which failed, then -j1, which took long, but worked. LibreOffice is getting hairy to build. My USE flags are "branding cups dbus gtk mariadb pdfimport -accessibility -base -bluetooth -clang -coinmp -custom-cflags -debug -eds -firebird -googledrive -gstreamer -java -kde -ldap -odk -postgres -test -vulkan" though I only set "pdfimport" in package.use.

It takes barely more than 15min to build on modern hardware. You need to adapt your MAKEOPTS to realistic expectations about your system, simple as that.

I'm happy for your 15 min hardware. I'm not so well off when it comes to compiling big hairy programs. I'm not complaining; I don't hang out in the terminal window while it's working. I just don't like it when it fails with reasonable settings. Everything else I've had to compile in the last year, did fine with 'MAKEOPTS="-j8 -l5"' and 'EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--jobs=1 --load-average=5 --autounmask=n"' but for the recent LibreOffice it failed at -j8, then -j4, and -j2 in-turn, then finally completed with -j1.

My OK hardware is noted in my sig.
Code:
$ qlop -c libreoffice
app-office/libreoffice: 1:48:17 average for 16 merges
app-office/libreoffice: 29s average for 1 unmerge
total: 28:53:14 for 16 merges, 1 unmerge

Are you using kde/plasma on the desktop? I noticed you are on the plasma profile. Do you need USE=googledrive gtk java? Shouldn't you have set +kde?

The only reason I build LibreOffice myself is for +pdfimport. I find it useful.

Yes.

Yes. All those USES are choices.
gtk is because I couldn't use kde.

Some years ago, I had to disable kde, because of the file explorer was buggy.
I never tried re-enabling it again since.

Quote:

Same for me. I need it too.

I tried again compiling libreoffice, with ccache and distcc (my default), but I stopped displaymanager before, and unloaded nvidia module, to have only 76Mb used from my 4Gb RAM.
Code:
# LANG=C free -m
               total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:            3941          76        2584           0        1280        3798

And emerge finished well
Code:
# genlop -t libreoffice | tail -n3
     Wed Feb 23 17:20:28 2022 >>> app-office/libreoffice-7.2.5.2-r1
       merge time: 1 hour, 16 minutes and 30 seconds.

I suppose that with the next version, it may be even complicated to find more available memory space.
Swap is not the solution, I have 12Gb swap space.

There has not been any noticable increase in resource hunger since LO 6.3. That was back in 2019. Maybe what you consider reasonable does not really match your hardware; or you have a hardware problem that is exposed under heavy load.
