Hello, I counldn't compile ungoogled-chromium from pf4public repo, and found out that sys-devel/clang-13.0.0::gentoo is culprit.

Here's output:

The issue is kind of weird for me, as I didn't find anything weird in logs, and https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-devel/clang says version 13.0.0 is stable on amd64. I also found this bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/802027 but I wasn't able to find any fix for me there, so I decided to post here.

Hi
It seems you dont have enough ram to support 12 jobs
Code:

 ninja -v -j12 -l0 distribution failed

with 16Gigs only.
Maybe try with less jobs.

Please include the complete backtrace with any bug report.
See <https://bugs.gentoo.org/> for instructions.

I did not see this issue so not sure what in your system caused this (and the b.g.o bug report appears to be a different issue), so I have to ask:
0 - are there any errors showing up in dmesg when it fails?
1 - is this repeatable?
2 - is your computer overheating? Is it otherwise stable?

There are no errors in dmesg, it is repetable, and my PC isn't overheating. I use ryzen 3600 @ 4,3GHz and 1,35V with dark rock pro 3 cooler, temps never go above 70 Celsius.

It seems resonable, but the thing is I don't want to use 12 jobs - I have 12 cores but only 16GB of RAM so i am supposed to run -j8, and I do. Here's my make.conf (I set MAKEOPT when I was installing, and didn't change it since then):

I am not sure why clang tries to compile with 12 jobs, do you have any clues?

Could you try without setting -march in CFLAGS ? There may be a gcc bug in znver2 generator...

The name of the parameter is MAKEOPTS, plural. The singular version is ignored, so effectively you have not set make options at all.

Well, that was stupid mistake on my side. I already changed MAKEOPT to MAKEOPTS, and verified compiling uses only 8 threds now with htop. But compiling fails anyway, here's the output:

lesnik2137,
You've had several eyes on this, and no one has mentioned this, but is the backslash in USE before gmp-autoupdate intentional?
Code:

You appear to have hit a GCC ICE:

Could you try GCC in ~arch? Failing that, you'll need to report a Gentoo bug and we'll work through this guide together.

Could you explain what do you mean by trying GCC in ~arch? I am not exactly sure what is it or how can I do it, and I couldn't find about this online. Only thing that comes to my mind when thinking about this would be adding sys-dev/clang ~arch to unmask package, but it couldn't be it, right?

The idea is to try to use one of the newer versions of gcc that's in portage - you should try keywording one of the newer versions like 11.2.1 or 12.0 and try again.

However this seems like a strange issue, saw a couple of search hits on something similar happening but never rootcaused on an old version of gcc, which doesn't help...hence thinking it was possibly a machine issue.

So go ahead first with a new version of gcc. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/package.accept_keywords

The thing is, I already use 11.2.0, and as far as I understand 12.0 is not out yet - https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-devel/gcc.

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] sys-devel/gcc-11.2.0  USE="-debug*"

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- app-misc/mime-types-9::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/var/db/repos/gentoo/profiles/package.mask:
# Eray Aslan <eras@gentoo.org> (2021-01-11)
# New upstream with new versioning scheme
# Please use version 2.1.53
# Removal on 2021-02-10 bug #762958

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

What do I do then? Am I supposed to report bug already, or is there any kind of fix/clue why this doesn't work?

Well, we don't know, internal compiler errors (ICEs) are hard to debug, the hope is that the gcc devs have fixed it - hence seeing if a new version exhibits the issue first.

So try to keyword 11.2.1_p20220115 and then try the live pre9999 versions to see if it helps.

Use
Code:
=sys-devel/gcc-11.2.1_p20220115 ~amd64
and then
Code:
=sys-devel/gcc-12.0.0_pre9999 **

in your package.accept_keywords to enable one of these newer versions of gcc. Note that these are "bleeding edge" and may break in other ways...

After installing the new versions, make sure you gcc-config to use them.

11.2.1_pNNNN is safe as it's cut from the stable backport branch of GCC (it's safer for us to use snapshots from it rather than cherry-pick and possibly get it wrong, or exclude useful fixes).

12.* is not as it's completely unreleased, fwiw, so don't try that bit.

It worked with 11.2.1, thank you. I belive the only issue was with gcc 11.2.0.

Thanks for letting me know. We'll stable 11.2.1_pXXX soon to fix issues like this (as I said above, no need for concern, it's a safe version: the upstream expectation is that we use these & other distros already are).

I've run into the exact same issue trying to emerge sys-devel/clang-13.0.1 using sys-devel/gcc-11.2.1_p20220115:

No, nothing more to do yet on the forums, please do file that bug in Gentoo's bugtracker and we'll dig further there. But it's crossed the threshold into bug territory.

[quote="pinchartl"]I've run into the exact same issue trying to emerge sys-devel/clang-13.0.1 using sys-devel/gcc-11.2.1_p20220115:
[/code]

Me too. It seems to be related to the lto useflag on gcc. I've two gentoo machines. the one with disabled lto on gcc compiles fine.

I disabled lto on 11.3.0, but issue persisted, so I upgraded to ~ 12.2.0 and now I can emerge clang 14
