getting Brother MFC-L2710DN scan function to work

  • Quote

Post by ExecutorElassus » Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:53 pm

I have a Brother MFC-L2710DN multifunction printer plugged into my router. The print function works (mostly) over CUPS (LibreOffice sometimes can't print a document, for reasons I don't understand, giving an error from the printer that the memory is full). However, I'm trying to get the scanner to work.

According to the wiki, this printer should automatically work with the Brother-supplied brscan4 driver, which is available in the main portage tree. Notably, the link in the wiki refers to an RPM, which Brother no longer supplies (they use .deb packages now), and the link is broken. But regardless, I'm able to install the brscan4 driver through portage. However, the next instruction is to give the command 'brsaneconfig4 -q' to query for attached scanners, and this fails with the following error:

Code: Select all

 # brsaneconfig4 -q
sh: line 1: /opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brscan_cnetconfig: No such file or directory
'sane-find-scanners' and 'scanimage -L' also both fail to detect the scanner. I have emerged sane-backends with the "net" backend enabled, but this doesn't seem to have helped.

Can anybody advise me on how to get this working?

Cheers,

EE

Upon installing brscan4:

Code: Select all

 * Messages for package media-gfx/brscan4-0.4.11.1:

 * If want to use a remote scanner over the network, you will have to
 * add it with "brsaneconfig4".
 *
 * Note that querying the network ("brsaneconfig4 -q") will not work
 * unless you emerge brscan4 with the zeroconf flag enabled.
 *
 * (Note: Above message is only printed the first time package is
 * installed. Please look at /usr/share/doc/brscan4-0.4.11.1/README.gentoo*
 * for future reference)

yes, and that failed with the error message I gave, about not being able to find the brscan_cnetconfig file.

My point is that "/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brscan_cnetconfig" executable is only installed when the zeroconf USE is enabled for media-gfx/brscan4.

Ensure that flag is set and installed, and that the file exists and is executable (no strange noexec mount option on /opt for example)

Ah, I see the problem (it is that I am dumb and don't check USE variables carefully). Anyway, I remerged brscan4 with zeroconf enabled, and now that works.

In between I added the scanner manually with brsaneconfig4 -a, and that also configured the scanner, so now it works great.

Thanks for the help!
