Hi.
I have a problem with my printers in Gentoo.
I use 2 USB printers which both works well provided that they are started when Gentoo boots.
If I start a printer after boot and send it a print task, it never prints my document and tasks list indicates "Waiting for printer to become available".
Restarting cups via `rc-service cupsd restart` have no effects.
It might not be a problem if I could keep my printers on all the time, but one of them shut off automatically when no task is received since about 10 minutes.
Even if it was started on boot, after this shut off, I can't use this printer any more (unless restarting the computer).
That's a pity.
Could you help me to solve this problem please ? I have never encountered this issue on any previously used systems.

USE zeroconf (support for DNS service discovery) is probably not the solution, but you'd only know for sure by rebuilding cups with it. I have USB printers (but not your printers) and do not experience this problem, and our cups USE flags are identical.
I'm suspecting this is related to USB, maybe in kernel.

Regrettably, I'm not able to interpret the kernel config. It is substantially different from mine, but my latest is 5.10.88 from gentoo-sources.
Would it be worth your effort to temporarily install and boot from sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-bin. You may learn things in the process and it won't harm your system.

I have ever installed the same kernel with gentoo-kernel (not '-bin') which isn't cutomized at all. First config posted was from manually built and configured gentoo-sources kernel. So I think this one is fully featured...
I just booted on this one (gentoo-kernel). I started my printer after boot, and still impossible to print : the same message "Waiting for prniter to become available" appears in print tasks list...

I'm pretty sure the way it's supposed to work is that when you add a device, or turn on a device, udev should discover it. Are udev services running?
Do you have this?

FWIW, using /usr/src/linux/scripts/diffconfig is a much better tool for kernel diffs than just /usr/bin/diff alone. |

The OP is using cups (libusb). There are known problems using the kernel usb driver with libusb. I suspect the warning from cups you recall was to disable it in the kernel to avoid conflicts.

So enabling it won't help with this issue, and may well stop cups from seeing the printer at all.
The problem here seems to be that the printer is fine until becoming lost to the system after entering sleep-mode, after which it can't be rediscovered. So it's not the printer driver.
I'm sure I experienced this in the past and fixed it. But haven't had a printer connected via USB for so long, I might not even have a record of how I fixed it now.
I'll have a look later today and see if I can offer anything useful. |

As say ian.au, I remember to have read anywhere that USB_PRINTER shouldn't be checked in kernel.
A little correction : it's not when system goes to sleep, as this parameter can be disabled, but when printer goes to sleep (even shut off) after about 3-5 minutes of inactivity. And unfortunately, this parameter can't be edited...

Anard,
Can you just confirm that both printers are directly connected to the same computer, and not to a usb hub or similar?
Also, I assume from reading through your posts a bit more thoroughly now that it is the Samsung printer that becomes disabled, the default printer remaining available?
Does running ie. in a terminal re-enable the device?
Finally, it might be a good thing to post your cups error_log and the output of any dmesg entries upon printer disconnection too. |

That was my last elog file printed by the latest cups update and provided as information only. Using (libusb) and having the (usb) useflag enabled for cups is the preferred modern method for USB printing. I would recommend going through the troubleshooting section of the Cups Wiki as it is possible you are encountering BUG #644636.

OldTango is on the money, apparently the kernel module will detatch properly in recent cups releases, so can share with libusb built as an <M>.
So ignore my outdated comment there, and sorry for the noise.
Whether or not enabling it will solve your problem is altogether another thing... the linked bug seems to be permissions related, logs would disclose whether or not something is happening there, where are they? 
In the absence of further information you probably are on your own here.
I only use IPP these days, and mostly wirelessly over network, so have no recent experience with setting up multiple usb connected printers. It tends to JustWork.
If I was having these problems now, I'd probably try to set up IPP over USB driverless printing and see how that worked out. |
