Hi,
I have just finished installing gentoo from the handbook and I now have several problems including the internet and the date.
When I use /etc/gentoo/ the output is:
cat: /etc/gentoo/: No such file or directory
when I use hwclock --utc the output is:
2022-01-17 20:28:14.155767+11:00
I'm not sure why there is a +11 hours
when I use ping gentoo.org the output is
ping: gentoo.org: Temporary failure in the name resolution
[/glsa]
when I use ifconfig the output is:
lo: flag=73<UP, LOOPBACK,RUNNING> mtu 65536 |

/etc/gentoo does not necessarily exist. It is not present on my system. Why are you trying to cat it?
Are you configured for a timezone that is +11 hours from GMT?
ping gentoo.org failing like that suggests that local DNS resolution is not configured properly. Do you have a valid IPv4 address and routes? Is name resolution configured correctly? How does your system acquire its address and name resolution configuration?
Are you using openrc or systemd? |

I thought that a correct installation requires that file to exist
No, I have set it to Australia, however it keeps adding 11 hours to my time, when using the tzselect tool, the selected time is wrong while the universal time is 1 hour off.
I am not sure, I tried to ping gentoo.org on a live cd and got the same dns error, this error only affects my computer.
I am using openrc |

What did you read that suggested that /etc/gentoo needed to exist?
According to the manual page, tzselect is for computing what to put in $TZ. It does not seem relevant to your problem here. You want your hardware clock set to universal time, and your Linux /etc/timezone set to indicate the local timezone.
If the LiveCD also has a DNS failure, then that suggests your DHCP server is not configuring DNS properly. What is the output of cat -n /etc/resolv.conf ; ip a? |
