Hi all,

I have an older HP laptop laying around which is currently running LXDE connected to an external monitor only since the original screen is busted.

I'd been trying to get to the BIOS (to boot from a Gentoo liveUSB) but apparently, the BIOS does not want to show display on the ext. monitor as long as the original/internal screen cable is still connected. So, I cracked the old bastard and got rid of the damn useless cable. Boot up the thing, and whaddya know? Still, no BIOS.

Even weirder,
Code:
xrandr -q
shows eDP-1 still as connected (?!) - did I just remove the wrong cable or what?

It's a long shot - but if anyone has got any useful tips that'd be awesome. Otherwise, this guy will just have to do with LXLE for the rest of its remaining life.

Just boot to your whatever Distro you have in it and use that as a starting point to install Gentoo instedof a livecd.
I hope you have space on your disk to create new partitions.

printf42,

Welcome to Gentoo.

To expand on what alamahant said, the Gentoo liveCDs are just toolkits that use use to install Gentoo.
Almost any linux will do. You only need a root shell and some tools.
None of the boot media goes into your install.

Other toolkits need an extra step. Once you get into the root shell,
Code:
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
nom you can follow the handbook.

Squeeze your existing install to make space, do a dual boot install. At this point a console only Gentoo will be good enough.
Check that it all works. Now you can remove the original install and donate its space to Gentoo.

There is a another way ... put the HDD from the laptop into another system and do the install there.

There are several alternate consoles. Serial, network ... you don't have to use an attached display.

Thanks for the warm welcome, NedddySaegoon.

Very informative post, thank you, both I and the old HP have our hopes restored!

Thanks again. I'll start tinkering right away.
