This will allow an easy method of contacting all moderators at one time.
  • Users:
    • If you spot what you believe to be a duplicate post, please post a link to it here. In addition, include a link to what is being duplicated.
    • If you find a post you think belongs in a different forum, let us know.
    • Avoid multiple reports of spam:
      • If a user's posts are all spam, report the user, not the posts.
      • Review this thread after submitting a report. Please delete your report if someone beat you to the punch.
    • Any other post that you think requires moderation (violations of Guidelines, broken BBcode, etc.).

  • Moderators:
    • Please delete posts after you've addressed them.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I'm going to leave it for now, hoping they add a URL. They copied this thread and oddly took the time to improve the formatting. --pjp

Reason: New user. Quoted a post and inserted color-disguised link spam in the quoted block. I mangled the link spam for now, and responded in thread. This user bears watching.

[Moderator note: this is discussed at some length in Filtering by username. Also, given that you disagree with the username, it would make more sense to use Report this user from the user's profile page, than to report a specific post by that user. As of this note, there has been no resolution reached. I will leave this report here until that discussion thread reaches a conclusion, one way or the other. -Hu]

Post: post 8688692
Reason: Moderators have higher authority than ordinary users and should be very careful with their statements. IMHO this moderator here is not ready for this position. One thing is to let users know what choices they have, telling what is right and what is wrong is something else entirely.

Oh I can remember now. We had this point already here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1138555-highlight-.html (at that time I was no mod)

and I got no answer to my last post of this thread where I cited from: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Gentoo_Kernel_Configuration_Guide

You wrote: "In particular a moderator should not push his opinions." in https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8688694.html#8688694

I also dont understand why a moderator should have more technical knowledge as any other user. And therefore why a mod should not be allowed to have his point of view in technical questions.

Some forums require, either formally in their operating rules or informally by a tradition of their prior administrators, that a user demonstrate a high level of technical competence before being promoted to Moderator. Since some forums do that, users (particularly new users who have not lurked long enough to learn our traditions) may expect that here, and treat posts marked with the Moderator badge accordingly. We already see a related phenomenon, where new users don't even bother to learn the forum markup language, and decorate their posts using some dialect of Markdown and expect it to work.

As for the reported post, I have no opinion at this time. I am only responding to address the question quoted above.

Is this about moderation, or is this about the history between the two of you on the manner of kernel configuration? It seems like is the latter rather than the former.

From my perspective, "allnoconfig" doesn't seem like a helpful recommendation to a question about how to determine "necessary and unnecessary modules." I agree with your statement that doing so "is not for faint of heart." You provided a warning with your own recommendation, so I'm confused by your motivation to report this post.
