My Gentoo machine has default run level 3 and boots into slim for graphical login. I have two questions.

(1) If password entry is mistyped a black, unresponsive screen results. The only way I know to fix it is by opening another console (CtrAltFn1..6) and issue commands /etc/init.d/display-manager stop plus /etc/init.d/display-manager start from root. Is this by design?

(2) in etc/slim.conf file there is a

Code:

welcome_msg Welcome to %host

setting but theere is no message in the login screen just the nice Gentoo logo. I could not find any help, explanation. Is there a fix to show this message? - obvously not a major issue.

This is an edited posting, originally posted as an sddm related question, but I decided to discard sddm and use slim instead. It is nice and simple, thanks.
