PostPosted: Sat Dec 04, 2021 12:16 pm    Post subject: Plasma Desktop Flickering - where to start? [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Hi guys,

I rarely post because 99.9% of the time, i found solutions by using the search button. No luck this time.

I recently upgraded my workstation (after a whole year of being offline), went somewhat smoothly.
However, the desktop is flickering, and I am not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Just to be clear, it is "only what it is on the desktop itself that flickers". Like, the browsers, KDE menu, dolphin, etc are NOT flickering.
So basically, widgets, folder views etc. Which is odd (and annoying!).
I tried removing, re-adding them, but same behavior.

System info
Code:

Driver (nouveau) up to date.

Just not sure where to start digging as I cant figure out any errors.

Any pointer please? :)

They say nouveau can be buggy?
Plz add
Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965 nouveau"

in make.conf
and rebuild mesa.
Dies that alleviate the problem?
Also rename any xorg.conf in /etc/X11
What does your
Xorg.0.log and dmesg and emerge --info
say?

Sharp_Rulez,

Your emerge --info is truncated. Please share it all.

Code:
sys-devel/gcc:            8.3.0-r1::gentoo, 9.2.0-r2::gentoo, 9.3.0-r1::gentoo, 11.2.0::gentoo

What are you keeping those old compilers for?
You have gcc-11 selected now but what is everything else built with?
It shouldn't matter.

Do all those old compilers indicate that you may need to --depclean your install?

Code:
dev-lang/python:          2.7.18_p13::gentoo, 3.6.12::gentoo, 3.7.9::gentoo, 3.8.12_p1::gentoo, 3.9.8::gentoo

Same question for Python.

Let me bump this back up to the top, to see if anybody has found a solution...

As the OP said, it's not the applications themselves, it's ghost 'boxes' that randomly flicker across the screen. There is no rhyme or reason to their appearance that I can discern.

For me, this started with sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-5.15.#
I update 'world' weekly. I've learned, over the years, to not get excited if something messes up. Usually, within a week or two, it gets straightened out. As you can see from my emerge --info, that's the latest gentoo kernel, and it's STILL messed up! As you can also see, per alamahants' suggestion:
Quote:

They say nouveau can be buggy?
Plz add
Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965 nouveau"

in make.conf
and rebuild mesa.
Dies that alleviate the problem?
Also rename any xorg.conf in /etc/X11
What does your
Xorg.0.log and dmesg and emerge --info
say?
I rebuilt my system with VIDEO_CARDS="intel I965 nouveau"
(I have no xorg.conf files in /etc/X11)

There was no noticeable change. I ALSO checked my Xorg.0.log for relevant errors. I found errors similar to this:
Code:
[   195.177] (EE) event5  - Logitech USB-PS/2 Trackball: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 39ms, your system is too slow
THAT'S a new one on me! So, to try to rectify this problem, I replaced 'INPUT_DEVICES=libinput' with 'INPUT_DEVICES=evdev' - at the same time replacing 'VIDEO_CARDS=intel i965 nouveau' with 'VIDEO_CARDS=nouveau' because the former made no difference. Reboot the machine, same problem!

I also checked the kernel source - I'm in the habit of copying the current working linux/.config to the updated source - and I don't find anything in the 'device driver' section that should be causing this. I'm stumped!

I should also add this:
Code:
[   207.545] (EE) event5  - Logitech USB-PS/2 Trackball: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 25ms, your system is too slow

[  7149.944] (EE) event2  - Logitech USB Keyboard: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 16ms, your system is too slow
That's from my current Xorg.0.log. I'm CURRENTLY running 'sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-5.14.14 - with NO ghost boxes in sight...

Any ideas???

Just an idea.

What happens if you disable the compositor in the KDE Settings?

Hi guys,

Sorry about that; when i looked back the forum was down, and then i obvously got busy at work.

I'll attach below the whole info in case you still want to go through, but in the mean time, i'll check what you have suggested above!
Keep you posted if anything fixes it!

Thanks again

EDIT: just updated the video driver list, cleaned old packaged as per suggestion, remove old xorg config; also tried with clean .config / .kde4 (just in case) -- no change, widgets are still flickering. Posted the updated emerge info below!

Code:

Compositor was already disabled in my case.
I did try enabling last weekend; it is a bit slow but was working (i disabled it back already).
Was funny to see the menu semi-transparent (working fine) over the flickering widget on the desktop.

After doing the above, I checked xorg.log. I cant see anything standing out except these two items (not quite relevant tbh)

[ 27.925] (EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{21d6007a-42e2-477b-bf43-a41996a94521}": No such file or directory
[ 213.438] (EE) event4 - Metadot - Das Keyboard Das Keyboard: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 19ms, your system is too slow

I'm a bit puzzle about the sddm permission as it started correctly (?). I'll google about it later on.

My feeling is this could be simply a bug in KDE (not sure to which package belongs the widgets though!)

It's probably worth investigating the "too slow" messages. Is there any sign of a runaway process, log messages streaming out, disk full, paging, ...

It might help to know the system hardware, cpu/ram/gpu

You may be right, perhaps i screw up something in my new kernel build which slows down, hence flickering?
I'll try to boot on my previous one that i used for over a year without issue.

Side note, I dont actually experience any other issues, even my windows vm works normally (speed wise) in vbox; just widgets on the desktop that are annoying

Give me another hour as I am rebuilding the updated packages for KDE that appear over the last week, hopping it would clear it up by magic...

EDIT: Oh, about the hardware. Not quite recent but still:
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 16GB ram
videocard: NVIDIA GT218 (NVA8)

oh well, might have found something.

I just booted up my previous kernel (5.9.14) and had no flickering issues.
Moved back to my current one (5.15.3) and flickering is back.

Weird that it just impact widgets on the desktop and nothing else; but that is a starting point.
Running out of time for today..

@dpshak: i read you have a similar issue, and also noticed you are on 5.15.6. Do you have your previous kernel to check if it clears the problem as well?

EDIT: for the record, i'm always building a vanilla kernel, not a gentoo one.

WHELP! What do you know!?! In MY case, at least under kernel-15.15.7, disabling the compositor solved my problem! 8O
I updated the system overnight and, when I built the kernel (using my latest '.config'), I have no issues!
I still have "* your system is too slow" showing up in my Xorg.0.conf
Code:
Main /home/dave # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[    30.684] (EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)
[    30.754] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

[    32.413] (EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{7ebdbb06-6422-4fa3-891f-c93d06ed44e8}": No such file or directory

[ 35051.075] (EE) event2  - Logitech USB Keyboard: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 19ms, your system is too slow

which is odd... I recently 'rebuilt' this machine, because the old hard-drive was full. The only hardware change I made was from a 500G SSD to a 1TB spinning hard-drive. The only software change I made, was from the nVidia drivers to the nouveau drivers. I don't understand why I'm seeing those 'event processing' error...

EDIT: for the record, i'm always building a vanilla kernel, not a gentoo one.

I ALWAYS keep the previous working kernel on-hand - just for this reason! So my fall back kernel is 'gentoo-sources-5.14.14.' With, or without, the compositor enabled in KDE, it runs just fine. The 'gentoo-sources-5.15*' kernels is when it started messing up for me. Even though it's not available in the official tree anymore, I'm going to hang on to it for a minute, until I have a couple more kernel builds without trouble...

Sorry i was offline for a while; i'm giving it another try.

Since the rootcause appears to be related with 5.15, i'm bumping up to latest 5.15(.12) hoping it will clear my issue. I change one setting with regards to nouveau inside the kernel.

Let's see. Keeping you posted!

same issue on 5.15.12 (with compositor disabled).

I'm tempted to just rollback to pre 5.15 and forget about it until next time. Cant find any easy solutions apparently

same here with kernel 5.15.11. When I boot the last stable kernel (5.10.76) the flickering disappears.
I am also using nouveau. Maybe we can narrow down the issue to the graphics card used?
My one is
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710] (rev a1)
Subsystem: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710]
Kernel driver in use: nouveau

I see a few options for people affected by this:
  • Permanently pin on <5.15. This will eventually fail.
  • Try a 5.16-rc to see if the kernel developers already fixed the problem, possibly without even realizing it.
  • Bisect the changes between v5.14 (which some users here report to work properly) and v5.15 (which is broken) to find exactly which commit introduces the regression. Once that is known, the regression can be reported to the kernel developers.
For the last option, the bisection could be speculatively narrowed to only the files relevant to the graphics driver. We don't know with confidence that it is a change in the Nouveau code specifically, but it seems reasonable under the circumstances, and it would greatly reduce the search space.
Code:
$ git log --oneline v5.14..v5.15 drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/ | wc
     24     191    1887
$ git log --oneline v5.14..v5.15 | wc
  13473  108668  929260

Meanwhile I found a solution that works for me. There seems to be an issue with kernel 5.15 and nouveau, but there is already a patch. More information here:
https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/nouveau/2021-December/039609.html
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm-misc/commit/?h=drm-misc-fixes&id=67f74302f45d5d862f22ced3297624e50ac352f0
I applied this patch to Kernel 5.15.11 and the flickering disappeared :-)
Hope this is a solution for others, too.

I definitely agree with you, but not knowing how to fix it, my simple idea was to rollback on previous kernel "until this gets fixed".. Having said this, i noted down what you suggested, that can be useful for me if something similar happens. Thanks!

Luckily, I just tried the patched mentioned above and it works for me too (5.15.12). No more flickering!

Special thanks @tomtom69 for having found the patch!

I'll mark the thread a solved, thanks again everyone :)
