Kde compositor stopped working

Anyone have the compositor for kde just 'stop' showing effects after the last update to kde and Xorg?
It's also causing chromium to have black borders.

I don't know what to post for logs for this, so if you can point me them, i'll post them.

Just restart it in System Settings/ Display. I do have from time to time if I make hot kde upgrade (i.e from inside the kde)

As far as I noticed, if compositor crashes, KDE disables it, so cold starts or anything do not work, if you do not enable its back by hand. But you are saying that it is "on", but not working.
Sounds like some mess is kde configuration files, switching it of, applying, the back on, does not help ?

Disabled it, logged out, logged back in, enabled it, logged out, then logged back in. still doesn't work. I still have 3d acceleration.

I tried a complete world rebuild, and 'sphinx' failed to build which stopped docutils from building. would that cause this?

Yes, it's maddening! I have the black Chromium borders too.

I also have a broken screen locker -- the one where you have to switch to another terminal and run

Forgot to update this here. haven't solved kde from locking the screen locker up resulting no signal to the monitors other than disabling anything that turns off the monitors. but i did find out why effects stopped. they removed xrander and egl BUT didn't update the kwinrc in the .config dir. open it up and replace 'GLPlatformInterface=egl' with 'GLPlatformInterface=glx' and double check to make sure kde didn't mark opengl as unsafe by making sure all you see in the file is one of these. 'OpenGLIsUnsafe=false'

Lots of searching and finding a random post that the same thing happened to someone with an intel igp, thought i'd give it a try and boom it worked.

Aha, yes, I'm using an Intel IGP too.

Does that mean that there is no need to enable EGL in Mesa any more?

If kde was the only thing using it, then yes. give it a try, the worst that can happen is something else breaks and all you have to do is recompile mesa with it on.

Note that egl (and gbm) is always enabled on newer mesa (without USE), they had no extra dependencies and being optional often complicated things (decent amount of packages depended on these flags too, so it was hard to disable them outside minimal systems anyway).
