PostPosted: Sun Dec 05, 2021 7:07 am    Post subject: [SOLVED]Wine-staging, winetricks and dxvk drive me crazy Reply with quote

Hello folks,

Sorry for this post title but i am at a point where i really don't know things work.
I did install wine-staging, dxvk and use winetricks. I have to say that I also emerge crossdev to compile Mingw32 for the bot architecture (32,64) and emerged vulkan headers.
All my games were running perfectly, nothing to complain about...except i did not understand how everything works so i decided to delete the .wine folder and start again to learn (this learning process is better than playing games!). I don't even know to start first with wine but let me explain what i have done so far.

1. Emerging wine-staging (current:6.23)
2. Creating the wine prefix but installing a game:
Code:
wine-staging game.exe
. But i also used the wineboot command
Code:
wineboot-staging -i

3. Trying to run winetricks like this:
Code:
 WINEPREFIX=/home/username/.wine
. And it failed almost at each attempt:
Code:

Executing mkdir -p /home/username

warning: wine cmd.exe /c echo '%AppData%' returned empty string, error message "wine: '/home/username/.wine' is a 64-bit installation, it cannot be used with a 32-bit wineserver."
------------------------------------------------------

What i don't understand here is the fact that i don't user the WINEARCH prefix so it winetricks should handle 32 and 64 wineprefix installation.

4. As winetricks failed, i ran:
Code:
winecfg-staging
and i can add some libraries like quartz, xinput, devenum, d3d11, dxd11, etc.

5. Then tried to install dxvk running this command:
Code:
WINEPREFIX=/home/username/.wine setup_dxvk-bin.sh install
with or without the --symlink flag with the same result:
Code:
wine: '/home/username/.wine' is a 64-bit installation, it cannot be used with a 32-bit wineserver.
Failed to resolve C:\windows\system32.

Finally i donwload the dll files thanks to the dxvk git repository and copied them to system32 and syswow64 but the error is different and came from wine:
Code:
cannot load d3d9.dll
but the dll is inside system32 and syswow64 folders.

6. Switched to Windows to play the game while crying.

Before i delete the .wine folder, every games were running fast for around almost a year so it means that the problem is me. I don't understand so i male mistakes.

here are some useful information:
My emerge --info:
Code:

If you need more info, please let me know.

1) Delete the .wine folder
2) run "WINEARCH=win32 winecfg"
3) install game/run winetricks

Multi-lib wine defaults to 64 bit architecture, which has limited support to run things.

The '/home/username/.wine' path is default, so there's no need to specify 'WINEPREFIX' when using it, although it does provide a good chance for confusion later on. :]

Regarding the issue with running Winetricks after Wine, do you perhaps have more Wine builds installed than just the one? Perhaps one that's 32-bit only? This would explain a lot, since you were specifically calling for 'wine-staging' in places, but not in others.

Try 'eselect wine list'.

Mistowolf,

Thanks but i need to learn here (it worked for around a year and i need to know why).

Chiito,
I only have the 6.23 staging version.
it's not clear for to say which build is (32/64): i just checked with eix and i saw
Code:
ABI_X86="32 64

In details:

Code:
Installed versions:  6.23(6.23)^t(10:22:37 AM 12/05/2021)(X alsa cups fontconfig gecko mingw mono mp3 nls opengl perl pulseaudio realtime run-exes sdl ssl staging threads truetype udev udisks unwind usb v4l vkd3d vulkan xcomposite -capi -custom-cflags -dos -gphoto2 -gssapi -gstreamer -kerberos -ldap -netapi -odbc -openal -opencl -osmesa -oss -pcap -pipelight -prelink -samba -scanner -selinux -test -xinerama ABI_MIPS="-n32 -n64 -o32" ABI_S390="-32 -64" ABI_X86="32 64 -x32" ELIBC="glibc" KERNEL="-FreeBSD")

You are right: no need to use this WINEPREFIX because that's the default one.

I still try everything bu still stuck and i did succeed in the past so there is a solution somewhere...

Hmmm, just to be sure, please also post the output from 'emerge --info wine-vanilla wine-staging' (can omit the actual info part since you already posted that).

At this time, I still can't think of any other reason for a 32-bit only wineserver being used like that, even though the prefix was just created using a build that supports both, 32 and 64.

Well, aside from environment variables being set when they shouldn't. I'll keep thinking and testing and let you know if I come up with anything else...

As a sidey-note, for Winetricks you can also specify the version/flavour using the WINE variable, like so for example:

WINE="wine-staging-6.23" winetricks dxvk

On the subject of environment variables, please provide the output of declare -p | grep WINE, as run from the user shell in which you then run wine.

Chiito,

I don't hqve wine-vanilla installed.
But here's the wine-staging emerge --info:
Code:
app-emulation/wine-staging-6.23::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="X alsa -capi cups -custom-cflags -dos fontconfig gecko -gphoto2 -gssapi -gstreamer -kerberos -ldap mingw mono mp3 -netapi nls -odbc -openal -opencl opengl -osmesa -oss -pcap perl -pipelight -prelink pulseaudio realtime run-exes -samba -scanner sdl (-selinux) ssl (staging) -test threads truetype udev udisks unwind usb v4l vkd3d vulkan xcomposite -xinerama" ABI_X86="32 64 (-x32)"
CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe -fno-builtin"
FEATURES="news parallel-fetch sandbox merge-sync userpriv usersandbox network-sandbox config-protect-if-modified distlocks preserve-libs userfetch unmerge-logs qa-unresolved-soname-deps binpkg-dostrip strict sfperms unknown-features-warn binpkg-logs usersync protect-owned binpkg-docompress fixlafiles assume-digests ipc-sandbox ebuild-locks pid-sandbox xattr multilib-strict unmerge-orphans"

And...I ran the WINE="wine-staging-6.23" and despite some errors (if it really was) from output, dxvk was installed and i got 60 and more FPS like before. So it works...
So if i use this command i can install dxvk easily? is that was the solution i was searching for?

Hu,

I ran the command "declare -p | grep WINE" but no output at all.
I don't know if that is a good thing or not...

Right, I wanted you to try the command as I wrote it just so we can be as sure about it as you. :]

Very strange. That specifying the Wine version via the WINE variable for Winetricks makes it work further suggests some other version is being used otherwise, and there doesn't seem to be any variables set either...

That is how I usually install the latest 'dxvk', but no, you normally don't need to use the WINE variable like that. It only makes sense when there are more than one Wine build to choose from.

By the way, regarding running Winetricks, I don't actually see it in the earlier posts, so were you running it on the CLI completely, or actually using the GUI (the GUI is not maintained too much, so there most likely are issues lurking).

Did you ever build and/or install Wine manually in the past?

What do you get when you run a plain 'wine --version'?

Hello Chiito,

Thanks for your time and your replies.
In fact, as for Winetricks, i am using both (GUI/CL) but in major cases it's the GUi. As you said, i have to focus on CL in order to avoid more issues.

I didn't build manually Wine: only emerged it with Portage.

So, is that means that i mess up with some USE flags or packages related to Wine?

No, I don't think there are any such flags that would cause this.

Did you try the last suggestion from my previous post?

What is the output of 'wine --version' when you run it exactly like this?

Hello Chiito,

The
Code:
wine --version
command returns
Code:
wine-5.0.1
.

Is this helps?

Shiru

Indeed it does!

This means that, in one way or the other, you do indeed have another version of Wine installed.

Did you try the command 'eselect wine list' from earlier?

If that only returns one version, and 'emerge --info wine-vanilla' returns nothing, then perhaps try the following:

Code:
$ which wine # This should probably return:

/usr/bin/wine

$ ls -l /usr/bin/wine # This will probably return something like:

/usr/bin/wine -> /usr/bin/wine-vanilla-5.0.1

You were right!!

Code:
which wine
returned
Code:
/usr/local/bin//wine

By the way, i checked the version and it was the
Code:
wine-5.0.1

And
Code:
ls -l /usr/bin/wine
returned
Code:
 /usr/bin/wine -> /usr/bin/wine-staging-6.23

So the question is: where the wine-5.0.1 came from?

If it is in /usr/local, then you installed it there. When was it last modified?

I cannot deny that i installed it here but i just cannot remember doing it (scary...)
This version has been installed in March 21st.

EDIT: i delete the /usr/local/bin/wine* and i don't have any issue at all now.
Thanks Hu and ChIIto for your help.
I marked this thread as solved.
