I have excellent news for you. All of those blocks are 'soft blocks' (little b) and it says "Conflict: 3 blocks (all satisfied)". It is ready to rock and roll! No action needed.

You can just run emerge -a -uvDU @world, kick it off, then emerge --ask --depclean, then we'll undo the masking/unmasking stuff and world & depclean again :D.

(EDIT: soft blocks are just where it's saying that those packages collide but it's saying that it has a good merge order worked out (hence satisfied). There's no need for you to manually wrangle these. Usually, the only time you actually need to handle any blocker at all is a hard blocker or a soft one which is caused by you having something you shouldn't in your world file, so emerge --deselect will help. The rest of the time, it is almost always misleading and noisy and not actually the real problem[/i].)

Didn't know that. Could be the first time I had some "soft" blocks. Started the update. with 240 packages I think I'll see the result tomorrow. I'll let you know how it ended.

Oh, real quick: do --keep-going=y if it's not too far in (^C and run it again with that option too). But it's not a big deal, shouldn't matter if you don't. May be better not to if it's more than a few packages in.

Ok, so got through it after about 15 hours compiling. Etc-update also was painless. Afterwards ran the "emerge --dep-clean" which went ok and gave this:
Code:
emerge --depclean
setlocale: unsupported locale setting
setlocale: unsupported locale setting

 * Always study the list of packages to be cleaned for any obvious
 * mistakes. Packages that are part of the world set will always
 * be kept.  They can be manually added to this set with
 * `emerge --noreplace <atom>`.  Packages that are listed in
 * package.provided (see portage(5)) will be removed by
 * depclean, even if they are part of the world set.
 *
 * As a safety measure, depclean will not remove any packages
 * unless *all* required dependencies have been resolved.  As a
 * consequence of this, it often becomes necessary to run
 * `emerge --update --newuse --deep @world` prior to depclean.

Calculating dependencies... done!

Do you still need to run
Code:

emerge @preserved-rebuild

?
Now what remains is the migration to libxcrypt.
For more info see
Code:

eselect news list
eselect news read < [30]     2021-10-18  migrating from glibc[crypt] to libxcrypt in stable>

Plz use EXTRA caution.

"Emerge @preserved-rebuild" says there is nothing to do! :D

Before I take the plunge for the migration I'd like to know what to do with the masks/unmask that has been put in place to get out of the previous mess.

Masks:
- glibc: >=sys-libs/glibc-2.33-r7
- libcrypt: >=virtual/libcrypt-2

Unmask:
- libcrypt: virtual/libcrypt:0/1

TEMPORARILY remove(comment out) the masks and post output of
Code:

emerge -uDNpv @world
or
emerge -1pv glibc libxcrypt virtual/libcrypt

either of the two will do.
You should see something like
Code:

emerge -1av glibc libxcrypt virtual/libcrypt

The reply is a bit longer. I do not see something alarming. But the versions of glibc and libxcrypt are lower than in your example.

Ok, so the "emerge -uDNV @world" went fine. An "emerge --depclean" showed up nothing, "revdep-rebuild" also found nothing and "perl-cleaner --all" found no outdated packages.

So.... "emerge --sync" and start all over? :D

Thanks a lot you all for this step-by-step support. I would never have gotten through it without your help. I just rebooted the laptop and everything seems fine.

Excellent news (and yeah, that list looked/looks great to me). emerge --sync, do that world & depclean dance, then I'd look at doing the eudev -> udev migration (see the news item). Then you're really all squeaky clean!

No problem, I'm happy you're getting sorted!

Oh no! I tought that we went from udev to eudev long ago. So we are now going back? I'm not looking forward to that....

Without getting into all the politics, sys-fs/eudev was pretty much a pre-emptive fork. Folks stopped maintaining it and the need for it is pretty much gone (see your news items -- there's one about eudev). So yeah, we're going back to udev now.
