Solved: Kernel sources needed to be updated.

I was trying to update using "emerge --ask --update --deep @world", after syincing. I issued a depclean after getting this error once because I saw that recommendation pass by in some of the previous updated packages. This is the suggested log from the failed update.

Code:
Portage 3.0.28 (python 3.9.8-final-0, default/linux/amd64/17.1, gcc-11.2.0, glibc-2.33-r7, 5.10.61-gentoo-x86_64 x86_64)

This is a log from the most recent attempt. This problem began with an update of six packages with the first four being successful. I am unsure if whether the log from the semi-successful update would be a more relevant output, as well as which other commands might be useful to diagnosis. Please and thank you for any help I receive! If I don't hear from anybody til after the holidays, then a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

What's the real error? You only posted an emerge --info but not what package failed and its build.log

Thank you for the quick response!

This is the output in "/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-470.86-r1/temp/build.log".

On a side note, this is a fairly fresh install as far as my WM and configuration goes. So it was a bit of a pain for me to grab this with permission issues and not having cut/paste ability in my terminal emulator.. At the risk of asking a stupid question - what is the prudent option for sharing a log file with a raw shell output aside from a link paste? When I tried to just cat into a local file there were ugly symbol escapes.

Well I took your response line by line and the first one obviously did the trick. This is my first run-in with having to install a higher version of the kernel sources. How often does a new kernel generally have to be updated manually like this? From my limited experience I have seen kernels update using emerge without issue before? I believe...

Thank you for the help by the way! Installed fresh sources and updated config/bootloader and it emerged perfectly fine. I am getting used to Gentoo, still. Most distros have very little maintenance necessary, but I enjoy the challenge and the learning experience. Happy Holidays to you!

Out of tree kernel modules are special. Proprietary modules are often extra-special, but in this case, just being out-of-tree is probably your problem.

Log pastes are fine, and app-text/wgetpaste makes uploading those easy.

These were probably ANSI color escapes. You could try to disable them, but I thought the build log ought to be generated clean.

You know that response was copied from your build log, right? ;) Not all packages produce great errors, but failures using out-of-tree kernel modules do print good hints for the most common failure modes.
Zhme wrote:

This was not your problem. Your problem was that your active kernel source directory had no Makefile, probably because you uninstalled that version of the sources. Installing a higher kernel version is a solution, but another solution would be not to remove the sources of the currently configured and running kernel. Yet another solution would be not to use out-of-tree kernel modules.
Zhme wrote:

Technically, the kernel didn't need an update. To build an out-of-tree kernel module, you need to be fully configured to (re)build your existing active kernel configuration. The removal of the kernel sources for the active version meant you could not rebuild that kernel, so you also could not build modules for that kernel.
Zhme wrote:

emerge can install new versions of sys-kernel/gentoo-sources, but that neither configures nor builds the resulting kernel. Configuring, building, and installing are delegated to you, as the system administrator. (There are some other Gentoo projects that take a more active hand, reducing what you must do personally. As in all things, there is a trade-off: the more you do, the more control you have. The more you delegate, the more you depend on someone else making decisions with which you agree.)
