Thunderbird does not show any menu. Not from the menu bar, not by right clicking anywhere or otherwise opening a menu works any more. I tried to unmask the latest version and install it (91.3.2) but no menus. Menus work in all other programs that I tried (firefox, konsole, kate).

Hi sigra,

As firefox works, the problem isn't just somewhere in graphical libraries (gtk+, glib). Because in this case all gtk+ applications would behave in a similar way.

Though... Both these programs - firefox and thunderbird - have USE flags for installing *bundled* libraries, like system-harfbuzz and other system-*. Have you installed both these programs with the same *bundled* flags values?

When I was talking about the graphical libraries, I meant x11-libs/gtk+, which is an unconditional dependency for thunderbird and firefox.

Interesting. No bundled libraries. It means that the issue is somewhere in the system libraries, and also thunderbird-specific...

Does it help to start Thunderbird in X11 mode?
Code:
WAYLAND_DISPLAY='' /usr/bin/thunderbird

or
Code:
MOZ_DISABLE_WAYLAND=1 /usr/bin/thunderbird

I emerged gtk+ versions 3.24.29 and 2.24.33 anew but still no menu. Then I opened system settings, compositing and changed rendering interface from OpenGL 3.1 to something else. Then I started thunderbird and the menus worked! I changed back to OpenGL 3.1 and the menus still work. I restarted the system and it still works.

It could possibly be related to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Toolchain/Corrupt_VDB_ELF_files.

Could you explain this relation? As I understand that page, that problem is that Portage would have an incomplete understanding of what shared objects not to remove on upgrade, effectively causing some packages to act as if FEATURES=-preserve-libs was in effect even when it was not. Rebuilding packages affected by that should, on its own, resolve the problem, without any user settings changes. Therefore, I am doubtful that changing to use the Something Else rendering engine would have been necessary if your problem was VDB corruption.

No, I can not explain, only guess. Changing the rendering interface was not the fix. Maybe it caused the fix to be applied by reloading some library after it had been rebuilt using emerge.

After reboots, the menus are missing. They can be brought back by changing the rendering interface, but firefox or thunderbird can cause the system to hang. It is probably not related to VDB corruption.

The problem is described here. To get a working system, I disabled hardware acceleration in thunderbird and firefox.
