Hello.

I did an update today and rebooted. After the reboot, I had an issue with X server: cannot connect to X server.

I saw a post with the similar issue (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1144515-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html). It looks like using a binary kernel solved the problem (or fixing the current custom kernel). I am using kernel-bin:5.12.19-gentoo-dist (I cannot really update it for the moment, here is why: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1141390-highlight-.html). I saw a similar problem on r/gentoo (https://www.reddit.com/r/Gentoo/comments/qx8b59/display_manager_instantly_freezes_and_crashes_but) and found out a comment about AMD GPU (https://www.reddit.com/r/Gentoo/comments/qx8b59/comment/hl9eq59) so I decided to move to hybrid GPU in the BIOS (I am only using the nvidia GPU usually, see here why: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1141455-highlight-.html). I rebooted and it worked with the hybrid option. I need to go back with my previous config, which is using only the nvidia GPU.

Can someone help me with this issue? Thank you.

SOLUTION

I emerged again nvidia-drivers. Then I had a message that tells that it was loading the module for linux-5.10.61-gentoo even if I was not using it anymore. Seems like eselect was still pointing to this kernel instead of my current one. So I did an eselect set, then I emerged nvidia-drivers again. The message this time was telling that it was loading the module for the right kernel. Just rebooted and moved from hybrid to only the nvidia card in BIOS. Now, everything works fine.
