Hi,
Sorry if this is a bit of a silly question ... but what do I get from installing 1.4 on a new system that I don't get from doing an emerge --update world on an existing system ?
Thanks. |

gcc 3.2 and all the optimizations/advantages it provides. Other than that, there isn't that much difference between 1.4 and older versions (ok, there are a few things, but that's the biggie). Note that emerge -u gcc won't work - see the announcement in the announcement forum. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. OK - thanks for the reply.
So if I don't install 1.4 will I still be able to keep my system up to date with the old version of gcc ?
If I do install 1.4 how long before I will need to install again - whenever a new version of gcc arrives - or is this time just an exception ?
Thanks. |

You should be able to do this for a while, but I don't know if it will be supported. I would guess that it will be probably at least a year or so before some packages start to become incompatible with GCC 2.95.

It depends on the level of binary compatibility between GCC 3.2 and the next major version, which remains to be seen. Judging from the efforts of the developers (thanks again carpaski) to provide an in-place upgrade path this time, I would expect that there would be a similar effort in any case. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Note that gcc changed the C++ abi to make it follow a rough set of standards that is follwed by a number of other compilers. The whole point was to make it so we didn't have to go through all this again anytime soon. If there were to be another change, it hopefully wouldn't be for a while. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. The trouble is, they have already found some spots where 3.2 doesn't do what they want, so there is probably another ABI change down the road. From what I heard, I don't think they are going to change it until they put together a good test suite (so this won't happen again). |
