I use a KVM with Display Port monitors (yes, I understand DP and KVM is asking for trouble but unfortunately my work provided docking station is DP only).

The problem is, whenever I switch from my work computer to my home computer (running Gentoo) X thinks the maximum supported resolution of my monitor is 1920x1080 instead of its real native resolution of 2560x1440. As a result my second monitor only comes up at 1920x1080.

If I query XRandR I get:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 4480 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 connected primary 1920x1200+2560+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 550mm x 344mm

   720x400       70.08
DisplayPort-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Which sure enough gives a max resolution 1920x1080 for DisplayPort-1 (the problem port).

The strange thing is, if I query the EDID information from the sysfs I get:

Code:
/sys/class/drm/card0/card0-DP-2 $ cat edid | edid-decode

Which clearly shows my computer has the correct EDID information giving the correct supported resolutions for my monitor but for whatever reason Xorg/XRandR isn't seeing it.

Now, if I turn the monitor off and back on again X appears to reload the EDID information and the 2560x1440 becomes available and I can switch the resolution back to the correct one. That said I am getting tired of having to constantly power cycle my monitor (and I'm sure it isn't good for it).

So I'm wondering is there a way to either:

1) Force/trigger Xorg to redetect/reload monitor information and update the support modelines

or

2) Manually trigger (from the command line) a monitor hotplug event (which I assume power cycling the monitor is doing).

For the record I am running KDE Plasma 5.21.5 and xorg-server 1.20.13-r1 if it matters.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you describe exactly how things are connected ? Do you have a dedicated DP port on your laptop, or it is USB-C ? What resolution your work computer sets for the monitor ?

I have a work laptop that plugs into a thunderbolt docking station (HP G2 dock). This dock has 2 DisplayPort ports which are then cabled to a dual monitor KVM switch (ATEN CS1942DP).

My home machine is similarly directly cabled (via two display ports) to the KVM switch (my video card is a AMD Vega64)

The KVM switch is then cabled to dual monitors.

I have configured the KVM with monitor (EDID) re-detection both on and off and it makes no difference. If I switch from my work laptop to my home machine, X on my home machine will fail to detect the correct supported resolution for the second monitor (despite the video card showing the correct EDID info). Power cycling the monitor though seems to trigger X to reload the EDID info and it suddenly recognize the monitors supported resolutions.

Now part of this I'm sure is due to the fact I'm using DisplayPort. For reasons I don't fully understand no DisplayPort KVM switch seems capable of fully emulating a monitor. My understanding is this is a limitation of the DisplayPort protocol. So when I switch a computer away from from the physical monitors the computer loses track of it. For instance whenever I switch back to my work laptop Windows basically redetects the monitors as newly plugged in (this messes up window placement, a known issue with Windows, but at least it gets the resolutions correct). Now my KVM switch does apparently try to fake out a monitor a bit but I think this may be part of the problem. I think when I switch away, X gets confused by the KVM and thinks there is a lower resolution monitor still plugged in and drops down to the lower resolution. When I switch back X doesn't notice the real monitor is back (although the video card does as witnessed by the correct EDID info in the sysfs) and I'm stuck with stale mode lines. What I'm looking for is a way to nudge my linux into re-detecting the monitor (without having to power cycle the monitor) and getting the proper mode lines.

That said, another alternative I haven't tried yet is to hard code the mode lines into a X config file but I would prefer not to have to do that given that I do have valid EDID information to work from.

Oh-oh, lots of things :)

Can you post Xorg.0.log after you attempt a switch (which gives lower resolution) ?

After I switch away I logged in via a different machine and XRandR doesn't show any monitors:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 4480 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-A-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Then when I switch back this is what is added to the Xorg.0.log

Code:

So Xorg sees all the correct modelines (i.e. "2560x1440") but if I run XRandR I get

Which is actually really weird because the log shows new entries refering to my other monitor (NEC) which is working fine but shows nothing with respect to the monitor (LEN) that I power cycled. However xrandr now has the correct mode lines for everything:

It really doesn't make any sense to me.

Interesting, frame buffer is correct for full resolution even when you do not have the highest LEN mode

Code:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 4480 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384

4480 is 1920+2560.

Honestly, editing xorg.conf and writing Monitor sections is a proper way to deal with cases when autodetect is not working right.

BTW, is it ever confused if you exclude KVM ?

Also, what if you switch the cables, making LEN the first one on DP-0 ? Will the problem move to DP-0 ?
