Posted: Mon Oct 18, 2021 3:24 pm Post subject: [SOLVED] Update a one year old system |
|
|
Hi,
This is my first post here. I am using Gentoo on a workstation - so I am working on it. Due to this - I didn't have time to upgrade it properly. Now I ended up with a mess.
Can you please help me with this? I have 2 weeks of annual leave since today.
My plan is to fix this within this time... Can you please help me?
This is very important, because as I said this is my workstation. I perform scientific analyses on it everyday.
I can provide more information if you need.
I tried to upgrade packages one by one, no success.
I spend my previous annual leave (one week) to solve this - no success. I followed many forum threads, etc... I managed only to update portage and emerge...
Help very appreciated...
P.S. I coundn't remove this large gap in emerge output.

kj184050,
Welcome to the fournns. A year old testing system.
Updating it is going to teach your more about Gentoo that you ever thought possible. It can be done but a reinstall will be much faster.
First, a few general points.
Code: | KiB Mem: 65825032 total
KiB Swap: 0 total, | That's 64GB RAM and no swap.
and 16 parallel make threads per emerge job.
Allow 2G RAM per thread for big projects, so that's 32G RAM needed.
Code: | EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--jobs=32 --load-average=30.00" | and allow 32 jobs to each consume 32G RAM at the same time.
Not all build system will honour MAKEOPTS nor --load-average=30.00". So things can gen really slow.
Do not think that the kernel is not swapping because you have no swap. That's only one of the kernels swapping options it can and will use the others.
Make friends with wgetpaste. We will need commands and all the output.
Do the following ...
Code: | emerge wgetpaste.
wgetpaste -c "emerge -uDNavp @world --backtrack=250" |
You will see nothing on the console until wgetpaste spits out a URL.
Post that URL. Its your command and command output.
You are doing pretty well to get as far as you have. I suspect that two or three steps will be needed to get up to date. _________________ Regards,

@NeddySeagoon thank you for your reply

I don't see a problem here. I am not using swap since .... 2000... I can manage RAM - monitoring All the time. I am a HPC admin and I can use hundrets of RAM in minutes. Swap for an ordinary user is pointless. + I sometimes make ramdisks for browsers. ( I use only nvme drives). SWAP = system slowdown.
Quote: | and 16 parallel make threads per emerge job.
|
This is tested. I installed the entire system like that - and I was upgrading whole chromium, OpenOffice, etc. 64 RAM and 16 cores is an OK combination.
Quote: | and allow 32 jobs to each consume 32G RAM at the same time. |
It is fine in my system.
Quote: | Not all build system will honour MAKEOPTS nor --load-average=30.00". So things can gen really slow. |
Maybe, I don't know. As for now, this works very well. My mini-itx system is liquid cooled and these 2 threads gives me the opportunity to work without issues while compiling sources. If it is not broken...
Code: |
Do the following ... |
http://dpaste.com/6VMZDRMNR
I see USE changes - done with dispatch-conf |

kj184050,
As you say, if its not broke ...
I was being lazy. I hoped that telling portage to try harder with --backtrack=250 it would find a depgraph solution but its not.
There are A few things to do.
Code: | emerge -1av perl-cleaner
perl-cleaner --all |
should update all the perl things and make the emerge output easier to read.
The hard blocks Code: | [blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11 ("<=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11" is blocking x11-base/xwayland-21.1.2-r2)
[blocks B ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11-r3 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11-r3" is blocking x11-libs/libxcvt-0.1.0)
[blocks B ] sys-libs/glibc[crypt(+)] ("sys-libs/glibc[crypt(+)]" is blocking sys-libs/libxcrypt-4.4.26)
[blocks B ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)] ("x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)]" is hard blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.10) |
need to be dealt with in two parts.
sys-libs/glibc used to provide the now depreciated crypt library. Gentoo is switching to building sys-libs/glibc with USE=-crypt and installing sys-libs/libxcrypt instead.
emerge -pv sys-libs/glibc should show USE=-crypt if not, we need to find out why not.
Code: | emerge -1av =libcrypt-2 sys-libs/glibc sys-libs/libxcrypt | should offer to build. If so, let it run, if not, post the command and all its output.
The Code: | [blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11 ("<=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11" is blocking x11-base/xwayland-21.1.2-r2)
[blocks B ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11-r3 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.11-r3" is blocking x11-libs/libxcvt-0.1.0)
[blocks B ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)] ("x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)]" is hard blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.10) |
is more difficult.
The default x11-base/xorg-server has USE=libglvnd now. I guess that removing x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers, hopefully, temporarily, is not acceptable?
I don't guarantee to be able to reinstall x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers. Its not a package I use. _________________ Regards,

Code: | emerge -1av perl-cleaner
perl-cleaner --all |
I've tried this previously, but:
http://dpaste.com/FYWAZQ4Q4
Code: | emerge -1av =libcrypt-2 sys-libs/glibc sys-libs/libxcrypt |
http://dpaste.com/5EMXBLCMB
I've tried to reinstall glibc previously...
Quote: |
is more difficult. |
I have 2 weeks, I can break Nvidia drivers (or remove), it is not problem. I need them on the 1st of November
I can switch to nouveau drivers.
There is another problem with this... I don't know how and why, I removed Linux sources... I assume that nouveau will need this.
I tried a few ways of installing Linux sources - no success...
I've installed Nvidia drivers many times. I can do this |

kj184050,
Where does
Code: | PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_8" PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_9 python3_8" | in your emerge --info come from?
If you have either defined in make.conf, comment them out.
Your profile defines Code: | PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_9" PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_9" | which should be all you need.
Your emerge --info contains USE=crypt
However, your error shows (-crypt*) which is correct. Its hard masked off.
The USE=libglvnd is correct for Xorg.
Your kernel is 5.10.2-gentoo which is old. Latest stable is 5.10.61. Latest testing is 5.14.12. Feel free to update the kernel.
If you really want 5.10.2 back, you need to dig the ebuild and its ./files out of git.
Nouveau is part in the kernel and part is userspace. To switch to Nouveau, you will need the kernel support.
Lets drop the fix the issue approach and try some of the missed steps. Here's a guide I prepared earlier.
The basic idea is to look through /var/log/emerge.log and find out when your last update actually was. Make a note of the date.
Get a full git clone of the ::gentoo repo to use as your ::gentoo repo, then do a checkout at the above date.
If all is well, Code: | emerge -uUDpv @world | will want to do little or nothing. Don't run it. This is just a process check.
Move the git checkout forward in time about 6 months and try Code: | emerge -uUDpv @world | again.
This time it should want to update lots of things.
Run it, then do another step. The detail is in HOWTO Update Old Gentoo. That was written around updating an 8 year old install. _________________ Regards,

I read the news when I upgraded emerge last time - It is all commented out.

OK, thank you - I saw this post. Tried to follow. Got crushed, But I will try to do it again in the morning.

OK, thank you so much. This is the thing I needed. A clean and strong advise what to do.
Once again. Thank you - And I will start my battle in the morning |

Welcome, also. For the future, the fact that you are working on it isn't a good reason to not update often, and if you update regularly you'll find it easy and may take actually two or three minutes of actual attention if you are doing it thoughtfully. It becomes muscle memory.
I'm working on my primary workstation and update daily on most days. Here is the strategy:
1. At 6 am, my script emerge.scr runs in root's crontab and mails the output to me.
Code: | #!/bin/sh
emerge --sync
echo "emerge -uDU @world -p" > /home/USERNAME/bin/emergeauto.txt
emerge -uDU @world -p >> /home/USERNAME/bin/emergeauto.txt 2>&1
mail -s "bethel emerge output" AN_EMAIL_ADDRESS < /home/USERNAME/bin/emergeauto.txt
|
If your workstation isn't on-line 24/7, the script can run via anacron instead. ~/bin is my personal script directory. 'bethel' is the hostname of my workstation.
2. Read the email with morning coffee, or when I feel like it.
3. When/if I decide to update, in a terminal launch "emerge -uDU @world" then minimize the window until I feel like getting back to it. I don't watch it.
4. When I do get back to it, check for any new files in /var/log/portage/elog; I use "ls -ltr /var/log/portage/elog" and on most days there is nothing worth acting upon.
5. Get back to regular work.
This way I keep my workstation up-to-date with minimal investment of time, angst, and issues. The longer one waits between updates, the more time has to be invested attending to "issues." I should have always done it this way. _________________ Andy Figueroa

Well... What else to say... Maybe I was not 100% clear. As far as I remember, I had a problem with one thing - I swap my 4K 60Hz LCD monitor for 4K 120 OLED TV - And Nvidia didn't want to upgrade. I couldn't set up 120Hz. At this point I was involved in too many projects, I had no time at all. Before that, I was upgrading the system regularly.

I was thinking about something similar. Nowadays, my workstation is rarely running 24/7. But I often work at night. Now I have time to do this, especially that I know what can happen.
Quote: | then minimize the window until I feel like getting back to it. I don't watch it. |
If you are not using - try guake terminal - I can't leave without it - I am using only it for many, many years. + tmux + vim - and I can't imagine a better combination of tools for working with terminal. I have a powerful tool in just one klick - F12 in my case. F11 for full screen.
Quote: | and on most days there is nothing worth acting upon. |
Another good advise. I remember a day when I had 22 news to read... As a long time Gentoo user, I knew I had to do this

Well... This should be put into the Gentoo handbook:) BTW... I should probably read it It's been a LONG time I have read it. Probably more than 2-3 years.
The funny part is that I knew this when I stopped updating my system. As I said I started to have a lot of work. Now I am paying for it.
OK. I am starting to fixing it according to NeddySeagoon's plan. |

Its only a git checkout and this is only for a sanity check. Its no hardship to try both.
Now we know your last successful update was in the second half of Jan this year, you will be trying to update to sometime in July.
If that goes badly, back in off a few weeks. Its just a git checkout. There are no hard and fast dates.
It all depends on what you missed. _________________ Regards,

OK NeddySeagoon, thank you, but I have to admit I was lost in your tutorial again...
So I started to upgrade piece by piece from the blocked packages mentioned in the beginning.
What I managed to do:
- upgraded libcrypt (intalled?) and glibc
- upgraded sysvinit, xinit
- commented
*/* PYTHON_TARGETS: -* python3_8 python3_9
*/* PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET: -* python3_8
in /etc/portage/package.use/python ... So you were right, it was not uncommented somewhere in the system
- Now I have only ONE blocker after trying to upgrade world:
Code: | [blocks B ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)] ("x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[-libglvnd(-)]" is hard blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.10)
|
xorg version 20.10 is blocking display-manager-init ( As far as I remember, this is a new change in Gentoo)....
Code: | $: emerge -av xorg-server
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] gui-libs/display-manager-init-1.0-r3::gentoo 0 KiB
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.13-r1:0/1.20.13::gentoo [1.20.10:0/1.20.10::gentoo] USE="elogind ipv6 udev xorg -debug -dmx -doc -kdrive -minimal (-selinux) -suid -systemd -test% -unwind -xcsecurity -xephyr -xnest -xvfb (-libressl%) (-static-libs%) (-wayland%*)" 5,003 KiB
[blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.10 ("<=x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.10" is blocking gui-libs/display-manager-init-1.0-r3)
|
Now I can emerge gentoo-sources - 5.14
Hmm... I have a nouveau module for my old 5.10 kernel. It is blacklisted. I can try to switch to it, and upgrade the system without NVIDIA. I can lost X |

kj184050,
Does adding Code: | --exclude="x11-base/xorg-server gui-libs/display-manager-init" | help any?
I suspect that other things will want to rebuild the x11-base/xorg-server you have installed and will fail as its no longer in the ::gentoo repo.
I'm trying to keep your GUI working as long as possible. _________________ Regards,

NeddySeagoon I will try this and let you know.
Now I have to fix my X I don't know why it has an error while trying to launch.
Will fix this now. I switched to nouveau - It was working only for Fluxbox. Now X won't start:) I have to fix this. + I have to remove nvidia-drivers. It has few dependencies to remove.

As for now, the situation is strange. I managed to run Gnome on nouveau, but it is so slow. Delays are like in tens of seconds... It is not usable at all. I tried to switch to other desktops, no success.
Will try harder to fix this... |

Well... I gave up with nouveau...
First, Gnome was very, very slow. Then, I was not even able to launch it.
Switched back to nvidia proprietary driver
OK can someone please help me with NeddySeagoon's method?
I am trying to follow https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:NeddySeagoon/HOWTO_Update_Old_Gentoo#Plan_C
but I don't know even how to start.
I assume I have to start from Plan C, correct? |

kj184050,
That's correct but you are only going back a year or less, so you will not need the old repo. Git started in 2015 so you can start with Moving to GIt.
All the ebuilds that were ever in the ::gentoo repo since the switch to git in 2015 are still there.
Once you have a full clone of the git repo, you can replay the history of the repo commit by commit as it happened. This means that you can create the ::gentoo repo exactly as it was at any time you choose.
I only use a date in Code: | git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --first-parent --before="2015-09-01" master` | as that's good enough. You will need different dates as your update progresses. _________________ Regards,

Thanks.
I am trying to follow your guide.
Starting from A.
First moving to git
Quote: | Fix the /usr/portage symlink |
Don't ask me why - I don't have it...
Code: | /etc/portage/make.conf
PORTDIR="/var/db/repos/gentoo"
DISTDIR="/var/cache/distfiles"
PKGDIR="/var/cache/binpkgs" |
I just copied gentoo git repo to /var/db/repos/gentoo
and I did:
Code: | git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --first-parent --before="2021-01-14" master` |
and then:
Code: | $: emerge -uDNav world
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies -
!!! Problem resolving dependencies for x11-terms/guake from @selected
... done!
!!! The following updates are masked by LICENSE changes:
- net-analyzer/nmap-7.91-r1::gentoo (masked by: NPSL license(s))
A copy of the 'NPSL' license is located at '/var/db/repos/gentoo/licenses/NPSL'.
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "x11-terms/guake" has unmet requirements.
- x11-terms/guake-3.7.0::gentoo USE="-utempter" ABI_X86="(64)" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="(-python3_6) -python3_7"
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
exactly-one-of ( python_single_target_python3_6 python_single_target_python3_7 )
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])
|
I didn't proceed
15th, and 16th were the same
I did:
Code: | git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --first-parent --before="2021-01-17" master` |
and:
https://dpaste.com/744R9U3SL
Do I have to fix this issue with glibc and crypt?
What about downgrading portage...
How shall I proceed? |

Code: | $ ls -l /var/db/repos/gentoo
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Oct 27 2019 /var/db/repos/gentoo -> /usr/portage
|
This symlink matches the old repo location to the new. A year or so back there was a mass movement from /usr to /var
Why? I dunno. Because it was there? There is a list f changes somewhere in wiki.
Note: not sure if that step applies to you. It surely does for someone updating say a five year old install/ |

kj184050,
Code: | !!! The following updates are masked by LICENSE changes:
- net-analyzer/nmap-7.91-r1::gentoo (masked by: NPSL license(s))
A copy of the 'NPSL' license is located at '/var/db/repos/gentoo/licenses/NPSL'. |
Portage can restrict what gets installed by licence.
To install net-analyzer/nmap-7.91-r1::gentoo you need to accept the NPSL licence. Read it first.
You might not want to accept the Gates Private Licence, for example.
You can add it to ACCEPT_LICENSE in make.conf, if its OK globally, or for package by package control, it goes somewhere in /etclportage/... one of us needs to read the man page. :)
Code: | !!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "x11-terms/guake" has unmet requirements.
- x11-terms/guake-3.7.0::gentoo USE="-utempter" ABI_X86="(64)" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="(-python3_6) -python3_7"
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
exactly-one-of ( python_single_target_python3_6 python_single_target_python3_7 ) |
That means what it says. Code: | exactly-one-of ( python_single_target_python3_6 python_single_target_python3_7 ) | and you have neither set according to Code: | PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="(-python3_6) -python3_7" |
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET should be set by your profile and you normally have no need to change it. Further, (-python3_6) means that Python3_6 is hard masked off. and Python3_7 is not selected.
We need to establish why not. Do you have PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET defined somewhere in /etc/portage/... other than in your profile?
Its possible to set PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET on a package by package basis but that is generally a very bad thing. Don't rule it out yet. _________________ Regards,

@NeddySeagoon,
But later, this license is not needed.
These python targets were removed by me - no issues now.
Now I can't decide from where to start.... Which date to choose...
It is starting to being a little messy.....
But I am willing to fix it |

kj184050,
To be confident in the process, choose a checkout date where there is very little to update.
Then you will know what works.
Once you have done that. make a bigger step. The bigger the step, the more likely it is that you will have problems.
As your last update was in January, pick a date in June for the second step.
Exact dates are not important.
If an attempted @world update creates a lot of problems, do not try to solve them, back the git checkout date a few weeks.
You are trying to find the path that regular updates would have followed, if you had done them, but at the same time, using bigger steps to save CPU time.
If you really wanted to, you could do weekly steps but that should be too many steps. You need to find out what steps work by trial and error.
Yes it might be a bit messy but you will learn a lot. _________________ Regards,

Thank you again...
One week of annual leave left
I am still very confused. Please understand me
In your guide, you wrote not to have too many downgrades.
I am having a LOT of downgrades when I go back to Jan - where I stopped upgrading the system. Especially glibc, and python problems... You wrote not to downgrade glibc. In addition, emerge wants to downgrade emerge - which I think is not a good idea.
The last date when portage doesn't want to downgrade glibc is:
Code: | git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --first-parent --before="2021-09-15" master` |
Which is like almost today
Quote: | choose a checkout date where there is very little to update |
It is difficult to say....the more I go in the past, the more packages to downgrade.
Quote: | Then you will know what works. |
So.. If I go in the past, I have to DOWNGRADE portage and glibc... and python....
I am confused. It looks like I upgraded glibc, and portage for no reason...
Is this a stalemate? |

kj184050,
Downcrading portage won't matter. You will get a portage that is contemporary with your git checkout date.
Portage will not let you downgrade glibc. Things break horribly when you do that.
You can use Code: | --exclude="<package list>" | as part of the emerge command, so that portage tries to solve the dependency tree without touching anything in <package list>.
When I wrote that guide, I had a clean consistent badly out of date system as a starting point.
You have managed to update a lot of things, hence all the downgrades you are seeing now.
If you were to wgetpaste the emerge command and output, that may be useful, along with the git checkout date.
If Code: | git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --first-parent --before="2021-09-15" master` | produces something that portage can build, let it run.
Trying is free. Do use as part of the emerge command. That tells portage to try harder to find a dependency graph solution. _________________ Regards,
NeddySeagoon
