Hello there!
I faced strange bug(?) on Gentoo host after full system update.
VBOX unable to open window with existing VM. It was pretty OK before update.

I recompiled kernel itself and modules with the same GCC:

After reboot modules were loaded OK

Then I recompiled VirtuabBox (for sure it was from ::gentoo repo)

After start Virtualbox GUI it was OK, but once I tried to start Virtual Machine - it was popup with error

In dmesg output I see next: [ 1292.308789] vboxdrv: 0000000002039166 VMMR0.r0

And in vbox.log I see next:

Note that stable version is 6.1.24.

Added: Your accept keywords is:
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64"

This is both ambiguous and unwise.

Do you also have updated app-emulation/virtualbox-additions and app-emulation/virtualbox-extpack-oracle with matching versions?

The problem may be with your virtual machine. Where did that come from?
Added: Create a new virtual machine as a test.

I can confirm I have exactly the same problem.

I did not upgrade my Gentoo (apparently wisely) for 4-5 months.

When I updated, first my old VirtualBox (older than current stable 6.1.24-r1) stopped working.

I updated virtualbox first to 6.1.28 then to 6.1.30, purged old versions, removed and reloaded modules.

Nothing happens, nothing specific in the logs, nothing that could pinpoint me to a solutioon.

---------------------

I found some Gentoo guy on the web before and apparently it worked for him with --disable-hardening when he built from normal source.

Unfortunately when I create my own ebuild for that in Gentoo, emerge crashes so I am stuck.

I found a solution that fixed my problem, it's here:

SoofMan - You may be your own worse enemy when it comes to stability or packages that won't run. Although you don't tell us anything about your overall setup, app-emulation/virtualbox-6.1.28-r1 from the tree and its related parts working fine on amd64 stable.

When I don't change anything for long months basically and I run emerge -avuND1 @system @world, after which half of my system stops working, it is logical to assume that one of the (supposedly "stable") packages I updated broke something, not me. Right?

I use Gentoo since 2008. I rememer times when I could not update my Gentoo for 2 years, after which I could run emerge -avuND1 @system @world and the system actually upgraded with little tweaking.

These times are long gone. Now I have to do it every 6 months maximum or the machine will break without a way to go either forward or reverse.

I also know that it is an "official recommendation" to keep the system updated at all times and run emerge world very often, but that doesn't work either.

If I did that, some of my packages that are critical to my life would always break. Very often new packages that are marked "stable" are not "stable" at all and they break something or stop working.

Honestly, I am starting to get frustrated and thinking that perhaps Gentoo is no longer for me.

When that happens, file bugs then? Also, I'm sorry about your experience here, but I've always found VirtualBox to be somewhat fragile.

It's just an angry rant, I am tired because this civilization is going to shit right now and I was thinking in the line of "at least my Linux is stable so I have a safe haven to go back to" but it turns out it is not the case.

Linux is also going to shit, at least partially. Stability of too many apps, packages and distros is decreasing year by year.

/end rant

SoofMan

I understand your rant, and feel your pain.

Like doctors and lawyers have to take courses (continuing education) to update their knowledge in order to maintain and improve their practices, users of Gentoo should always be "in school" to do the same, as well as to fix what is broken in their day-to-day practices. If it was common for Gentoo users to share your experiences, no users would be left. You might, therefore, evaluate your practices, clean up your system, then keep it up-to-date, with the help of other users.

Gentoo can be a joy to use or a pain in the neck. Let those of us who regularly read and respond to forum posts help you attain the "joy to use" status. Consider beginning a new forum post asking for advice in the Portage & Programming forum, including your "emerge --info" output and /etc/portage/make.conf for a beginning.
