Hi all,

Recently began a complete new reinstall of Gentoo. Guessing that I was about to suffer SSD failure I swapped it out for a new one. Now I'm starting afresh, having spent several months with Gentoo.

I've tried to be careful, thorough, read TWICE all the relevant docs. But I cannot emerge GIMP because one of the packages keeps failing, media-libs/libmypaint

Posting the requested outputs here hoping someone can please explain what's going on. First is `[/b]b]emerge --info '=media-libs/libmypaint-1.6.1::gentoo'[/b]

The file for the build environment cannot be found! This may be a part of the problem of course... but then if I knew what the answer was...

Can anyone please shed any light on this? I need GIMP for my daily workflow. Being able to analyse these issues is then much more widely helpful :)

It seems to bug out because it can't find XML::Parser - i.e ebuild should probably have dev-perl/XML-Parser as a dependency.

You can try to emerge dev-perl/XML-Parser and then try GIMP / media-libs/libmypaint again.

Yes, thank you!

You, Sir are a scholar and a gentleman. That was exactly what the problem was. Both packages emerged without error after I followed your suggestion.

sixtysixtysix,

You probably missed a
Code:
perl-cleaner --all
al a perl update.
There will be more like this. Be sure to use the latest ]perl-cleaner.

There's no need to guess. smartctl -a or smartctl -x will show you what you need to know.
It could have been an expensive mistake.

NeddySeagoon,

Thank you - all very helpful stuff.

Indeed I ran perl-cleaner earlier but OH MY did it ever need running again!

I will certainly look into smartctl, but just to reassure you:

I've been helping the local population for years with various small computer/software issues. As such I have a cave full of parts! So, while the old SSD was behaving strangely, it cost me only the time involved to swap it out for a Samsung EVO850. No money was spent :)

Every time I reinstall, every time I have to fix a problem (Shotwell won't build now, doh!) I learn more. It really helps having such a supportive and friendly community.
