Hi. Up until my recent emerge @world, I have been running gentoo on this laptop for years with KDE plasma as the desktop of choice. Now, suddenly, it comes up with only a black screen (no Xcursor visible).

When I shutdown display-manager (configured for sddm), and try to just startx, it gives me:
Code:

hostname: Host name lookup failure

X.Org X Server 1.20.13

Build Operating System: Linux 5.10.61-gentoo x86_64 Gentoo
Current Operating System: Linux MSILT-lin 5.10.61-gentoo #1 SMP Wed Sep 22 09:18:31 EDT 2021 x86_64

Build Date: 04 October 2021  02:49:27PM

Current version of pixman: 0.40.0

I'm not sure why it is saying there is a hostname look up issue... executing hostname gives me my hostname...

The contents of my .xinitrc:
Code:
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

exec /usr/bin/startplasma-x11 &

If I set twm as the desktop, startx works as it should: i.e., twm starts, and appears to work normally.

If I execute startplasma-x11 directly from a command line:
Code:
$DISPLY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

So I try:
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0 && /usr/bin/startplasma-x11

Same error

So, it is no surprise to me that sddm wouldn't start the gui, when it won't even start when done via startx. For S&Gs, I tried using lightdm and xdm instead of sddm -- no surprise there either: the results are the same: black screen, no cursor.

Code:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf
For whatever reason, the forum will not let me post this... it gives me an error when I try to include it... Here is a pastebin of it.

/etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/20-opengl.conf
Code:
Section "Files"
EndSection

It is probably worth mentioning that I have synced my world only a minute ago -- so everything should be current.

Not sure what else might be needed, but I'm happy to provide more if need be.

Thank you for your help.

Hi
in make.conf
Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia intel i915"
then
emerge -1av mesa

in /etc/X11
rename all .conf files temporarily.
Then reboot
and see if it helps.
Optimus beyond .conf files in /etc/X11 also needs display-manager config.
plz see
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVIDIA/Optimus#Simple_Desktop_Display_Manager_.28SDDM.29
I suspect a "dispatch-conf" updated the .conf of sddm so you are facing this problem.
also in .xinitrc
Code:

#xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
#xrandr --auto
export DESKTOP_SESSION=plasma
exec /usr/bin/startplasma-x11

Revert to intel for a while and then try to reconfigure.

Yes, that is one of the documents I was following. I have the SDDM set up correctly, I'm pretty confident of that.

I took your advice, and dropped the Nvidia card from my configs... and sddm did start just fine... so... I'm thinking you are right. A config file was stomped. But, I'm always careful with my etc-updates... if it stomped a file, it must have deemed it trivial, and overwrote it without my involvement.

So, it is working with just the intel (I didn't use the i915 -- that is super old, my system is just very old ;) ), but it seems to work, so now I have to get that optimus working again.

You have given me some terra firma from which to work. Thank you. Hopefully I can get the NVIDIA working again...

I'm going to hold off on calling this solved for now, though, until Optimus is running again.

Well, I've followed the docs, and rebuilt the system with regards to Optimus... it is still definitely doing the same thing.

If I leave nvidia out of the equation, X will start. As soon as I try to bring nvidia into it, I just get a black screen (no X cursor) where the SDDM login screen should be. Like I said before: it doesn't matter which display manager I use -- so this isn't the old "sddm & blackscreen" issue.

To get it to come up, all I have to do is get rid of everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Right now, I have the example config from the Gentoo Optimus Wiki:

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "01:00:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

So it seems like it is trying to use the nvidia as primary (which would be close enough for me!), but it is failing.

Again, I cannot find any error output on this (I posted my logs in my initial post).

Plz also check if
Code:

nvidia-settings

may help you create a .conf file for nvidia.

Hmm.. a nice thought, but that doesn't seem to be faring any better.

Something must have changed here with optimus...

My xorg.conf
Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "layout"
   Screen 0 "nvidia"
   Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "nvidia"
   Driver "nvidia"
   BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
   Option "Coolbits" "28"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "nvidia"
   Device "nvidia"
   Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "intel"
   Driver "modesetting"
   BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "intel"
   Device "intel"
EndSection

Yours seem to luck the "bus ID" for the intel card
Code:

lspci | grep -i vga

Other than that i have
Code:

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

as a kernel parameter.
Also probably trivial but my "busID"s are in the form
Code:

PCI:0:2:0

ie single digit.
Also plz have a look into your
Code:

/etc/modprobe.d

for possible clues.

Yes. All that has been done and re-done more times than I can count. We have come full circle.

I appreciate the input. But I'm now convinced this is a bug -- or perhaps, NVIDIA has simply bailed on this architecture. What a bummer. I wish I could just disable the intel graphics in the bios -- but you cannot do anything in the bios on this laptop. It is pathetic.

When I get some time, I'll file a bug report.

Thanks again.

Is this an optimus chipset?

If so I feel your pain.

My xorg.conf:

Code:
 Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreen"
#    Screen 0 "nvidia"
#    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    Option "AccelMethod"        "glamor"
    Option "DRI"                "3"
    Option "Composite"          "Enable"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:01:00.0"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Yes. Optimus.

Thank you for your post. That config was very similar to my original. It gives me the same black screen I started with. I think my graphics chip is too old, and nvidia probably bailed on it...
