Anyone else salivating at the idea of installing Gentoo on their Steam Deck?

Yes, absolutely! I pre-ordered (reservation) one on the first day.

Last one to post a working kernel .config is a, uh, broken symlink or something! :)

Looks like we'll need the 5.16 kernel

https://www.steamdeck.com/en/faq

The good news:
Quote:
What can you tell us about the BIOS and does it allow dual-boot?
Multi-boot is supported - you can have multiple OSes installed and choose which one to boot into. Users will have access to the BIOS menu.

Can you boot an OS off the SD card?
Yes, Steam Deck supports boot from microSD.

Sounds like it will be easy to boot off the SD and install gentoo on the nvme.

I'm really excited for the Steam Deck, no so sure about running Gentoo on it. Gentoo is my favorite OS, but Arch Linux is good enough of a base that I don't think I'll bother. But who knows, sounds like a fun project. Maybe since the hardware is gonna be the same on every Steam Deck, someone can just compile Gentoo with the Steam Deck as the target and release and easy to install file...But I recon that would take most of the fun out of it for most of you guys.

I was wondering what firmware files we'll need to build into the kernel to get amdgpu working, found this:

The Deck is Van Gogh. (I think I see what they did there...)

I'm super excited for this device, too bad I'm in the "After Q2" group :(

With the amount of work they put into SteamOS 3 it would almost feel redundant to install Gentoo but having the option available at launch is a great thing and it will be interesting to see what others can do with the hardware. I know I'll use it solely for gaming but its open platform is a field day for software/hardware hackers, can't wait to see what people do with it!
