I thought that I had successfully installed gentoo 1.4 on my sunfire v100. Unfortunately it wouldn't boot to linux and to my suprise, after fsck, it booted back to solaris. I hadn't realized that there are three disks in this booger and must have disksuite. After booting to the cdrom I did fdisk on all disks:

##############
fdisk /dev/hda

Disk /dev/hda (Sun disk label): 16 heads, 255 sectors, 19156 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4080 * 512 bytes

Device Flag Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 0 32 65280 83 Linux native
/dev/hda2 u 33 278 499800 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 u 0 19156 39078240 5 Whole disk
/dev/hda4 279 19156 38509080 83 Linux native

gentoo proc # fdisk /dev/hdc

Disk /dev/hdc (Sun disk label): 16 heads, 255 sectors, 19156 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4080 * 512 bytes

Device Flag Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 0 126 257040 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdc2 u 126 1155 2099160 3 SunOS swap
/dev/hdc3 u 0 19156 39078240 5 Whole disk
/dev/hdc5 1155 2184 2099160 0 Empty
/dev/hdc6 2184 4241 4196280 7 SunOS var
/dev/hdc7 4241 6298 4196280 4 SunOS usr
/dev/hdc8 6298 19156 26230320 8 SunOS home

gentoo proc # fdisk /dev/hdd
You will not be able to write the partition table.

Disk /dev/hdd (Sun disk label): 1 heads, 640 sectors, 2048 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 640 * 512 bytes

Device Flag Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdd1 r 0 1355 433600 4 SunOS usr
/dev/hdd2 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd3 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd4 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd5 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd6 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd7 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
/dev/hdd8 r 0 1355 433600 2 SunOS root
###############

My question is: Must I blow away the partiitions on dev/hdc & /dev/hdd? I wouldn't mind leaving the SunOS, if I could boot to Gentoo, but , working through the console I can't get it to boot to linux.

Perhaps this is a better question for the sparc list, but any help is appreciated.

eric

Your default boot device is probably set to one of the other disks in your Sun's OpenPROM. Just go the OpenPROM, and change the default boot device to the disk that you installed SILO on.
