Hi,

When I tried installing Compsize, I got this error during the install phase:
Code:
>>> Install sys-fs/compsize-1.5 into /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image
make -j8 PREFIX=/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr install
install -Dm755 compsize /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/bin/compsize
install -Dm755 compsize.8 /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/share/man/man8/compsize.8
make: *** [Makefile:27: /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/bin/compsize] Segmentation fault
make: *** Deleting file '/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/bin/compsize'
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** [Makefile:32: /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/share/man/man8/compsize.8] Segmentation fault
make: *** Deleting file '/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/compsize-1.5/image/usr/share/man/man8/compsize.8'

I also get this line in dmesg:
Code:
install-xattr[6630]: segfault at 7313f0948f50 ip 0000558d5ebc798c sp 00007ffe7135dc70 error 4 in install-xattr[558d5ebc7000+1000]

Here is my emerge --info:

Thank you for your reply. Yes. It happens every time. I also saw this error happen in Firejail and Openbox.
Edit: I tried reinstalling some other packages. It looks like any package using the "install" command fails to install.
Edit 2: I think I found the problem. When I tried calling "/usr/lib/portage/python3.9/ebuild-helpers/xattr/install" manually, it also had the same error. I tried calling install-xattr manually as well. It also failed. How can I fix this?

Try to recompile sys-apps/install-xattr with safe cflags -march=native -O2 -pipe

I still get the same error. What can I do? Is a reinstall necessary?
Edit: I will just reinstall. This is not an old install so I am not too worried.

A reinstall is probably the wrong approach. If you don't know how the existing install reached this state, how will you avoid reproducing the error? What exactly did you do in response to fedeliallalinea's latest request?

I tried to re-emerge install-xattr. It also failed with "Segmentation Fault". Anything that called on "install" or "install-xattr" failed.

You may need to manually replace those files with good versions once. The installed version may be too broken to install any new packages, including its own replacement. That does not mean you should wipe the whole system and start over, when you can install a few files by hand, then rerun the package afterward to synchronize reality with the database.

Or try to install this compiled version of sys-apps/install-xattr-0.8
