Hi,
I've an external 5TB Seagate USB driver, it worked fine one day then a few months ago it stopped being detected, I left it for a few months and am now looking to get it working again.
Plug the device in and I get the following repeated kernel messages...

What is strange is that I've not changed the USB3.0 port that is used so the power should be the same, the cable is a short 50cm cable that is used for this device alone.
The device is detected in some manner since...

I've also tried connecting it to a USB3.0 port on a laptop without any more success. Tried it on a Raspberry Pi-4b with a little more success....

Aside from the obvious of splashing out the vast expense of £5-6 for a new cable I'm wondering if there is anything else I could try? I'm not adverse to ripping it out and connecting it via SCSI and having another internal hard drive but thought I'd seek some advice before breaking out the tools.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Boot into a livecd and plug in the drive. If all ok then its your kernel.
If not please try a different usb port or new cable.....? _________________

slackline,
At 5TB, it has to be rotating rust. A Raspberry Pi probably won't power that.
Code: | Bus 001 Device 018: ID 0bc2:ab28 Seagate RSS LLC Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB SRD00F1
...
(Bus Powered)
MaxPower 100mA |
100mA won't power the drive spin motor, so it must have a PSU.
Does the PSU work?
Even worse, is it provided with a Y-cable?
Ahh ... It has a Micro-USB3 connector on the drive. Is that loose? _________________ Regards,

Thanks both,
@alamahant : Tried ruling it out by connecting it to a few devices don't think its kernel related.
@NeddySeagoon : The newer Pi4B has sufficient power, I've a second 5TB drive connected and running fine, perhaps I should disconnect it and give this one a try on its own. The micro-usb3 connecter on the drive seems solid (I decided to take it out of the casing this evening). As its now out I'll try removing the USB3 connected and connecting it via SCSI and see if that gives it sufficient power to get it spinning. The cable it uses is a powered cable like this one so it could be the cable is knackered but its not been moved/used much.
Avenues to investigate, thanks for your time as always.
Will report back what I find. _________________ "Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Art is everything else we do." - Donald Knuth |

slackline,
I don't believe the advertised 100mA MaxPower.
UAS can be problematic.
Have you tested in on a USB2 and a USB3 port?
Its not possible to run UAS over USB2, so it won't be a problem there. _________________ Regards,

Read your own error messages?
50cm cable is NOT short. Get a shorter cable. Get a powered USB hub.
A good powered USB hub solved all my USB drive problems. _________________ Andy Figueroa
