|

Hello,
I've got a few systems which are identical hardware-wise. I'd like to clone gentoo from one of them to others. Are there any specific things I should pay attention to, except the obvious (ssh keys in user directories and non-colliding addresses, as the systems will be on the same network)?
TIA |

I intend to generate new labels/uuids, but that's not really a big issue as the disk are not going to be connected to the same system. |

You'll find my stage4 script and companion exclude file in the following discussion:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1132899-highlight-stage4.html
Today's stage4.tar.zst is 3.4 GB in 10 minutes on a very mature but fairly clean system. (only two kernels installed)
For most use cases you can make the stage4 while running and working on other things. Keep in mind that it does not include ANY personal files, but it does create my user directory.
Restore to the destination of your choice, edit fstab as needed, chroot into it to install and configure GRUB if necessary, if you use GRUB or whatever you boot with. This is set up for traditional BIOS booting with all system directories installed in system root (/). I haven't used it for backing up EFI partitions/files.
Your stage4 archive is also a complete system backup. _________________ Andy Figueroa

I've cloned my Gentoo install multiple times! Typically I use rsync for this, rsyncing the install from one drive to another is a good way to clone the install, just make sure you update fstab, /etc/machine-id, the bootloader, and configure the kernel for the new system. You can also use mkstage4 which creates stage4 tarballs of your install, which you can install on other systems the same way you install Gentoo from stage 3! |
