Recommended backup software for VMWare?

I'm beginning the journey of converting my physical Gentoo machines to virtual. I'm using ESXi as the hypervisor. Veeam seems to be the "go-to" solution to backing up the VM's, however I was hoping there was a solution that would run in Linux and accomplish close to the same thing.

Suggestions?
