so i cant get dunst to work i get critical cannot connect to dbus ive been at this for 2 days, any tips?i also read that if another daemon is running it wont work, this is a fresh system with dwm and i tried setting dbus-launch in .xinitrc and it always doesnt work although on boot dbus starts, then i checked in /etc/dbus and everything is right

https://dunst-project.org/faq/
dmesg | grep dunst returns nothing and dbus-daemon is running in htop

Don't know what to tell you, but it works fine here.
You don't need to start dbus like that, it should start by default as a service, if not it will start automatically when something asks for it.

What happens when you start dbus-monitor in one terminal and then in other terminal execute
Code:
notify-send "test"

Failed to open connection to session bus: Using X11 for dbus-daemon autolaunch was disabled at compile time, set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS instead

Code:
#!/bin/sh

# X settings
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1408x792_60.00 --scale-from 1920x1080 &
xset r rate 400 100

# Autostart
~/.local/bin/bars/gentoo_bar &
~/.local/bin/xsession_destroyah &
~/.fehbg &
xclickroot -r ~/git/xmenu/xmenu.sh &
dunst &

#dwm start loop
while true; do
    /usr/local/bin/dwm 2> /dev/null
done

#eval $(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session) i dont think i need this...dunst doesnt work regardless

i tried re emeging dev-libs/dbus-glib tried using dunst as root tried making a script in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d to find DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS nothing worked i even re installed gentoo from scratch, i think i haed it work in ~amd64 but that shouldn't be the issue here

From the man page (man dbus-launch)
Code:
To start a D-Bus session within a text-mode session, do not use dbus-launch. Instead, see dbus-run-session(1).

             ## test for an existing bus daemon, just to be safe
             if test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ; then
                 ## if not found, launch a new one
                 eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax`
                 echo "D-Bus per-session daemon address is: $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"
             fi

Seriously this isn't rocket science.

The message from dunst was that it wanted to be either started by something like systemd or set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

The snippet of code from the man page tells you how to set DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

Run it in .xinitrc before you try and execute dunst.

Or simply use exec dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session dwm, see dwm wiki page
