In case it's useful, a shameless plug for my wiki item on compiling kernels as user, which handles cross-compiling and managing multiple kernel configs.

That looks good.

Once upon a time the kernel build process actually did try to remove eveything. It was an accident.
As kernel devs never build kernels as root, it escaped into the wild.
