Hello, I cannot bring my wireless interface up with this command:

ip link set wlp2s0 up

This problem occured as soon as I logged in to my freshly installed Gentoo system. I could connect to internet with net-setup within the livecd. After the installation ip link did not show my wireless interface, to solve this problem I compiled the kernel again with the rtl8723b module and ip link displayed the wireless interface as wlp2s0. My network card is Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter. What should I do to bring my wireless interface up?
ip link set wlp2s0 up prints no text and returns. If I try to initialise wpa_supplicant with the command below, I get

Welcome to Gentoo.

What alamahant pointed to is required but may not be sufficient. It depends how your kernel is compiled.

The firmware will be loaded at the time the kernel module is initialised, so it has to be accessible then.
When the kernel driver is configured as <M>, the firmware can be read from /lib/firmware.That works.

When the kernel driver is configured as <*> then the driver will be initalised before root is mounted. Thus /lib/firmware is not available.
The firmware must be built into the kernel binary.

First of all, thanks for the instant support! I expected to wait for a day for a reply but I got 2 replies in 20 minutes.
I have rtl8723befw_36.bin and rtl8723befw.bin files. I had manually compiled my kernel with the instructions from the Handbook and added support for my wireless card as <*>. I will recompile the kernel with <M> and try again. I guess the firmware is not loaded according to dmesg, there are relevant lines:

Mr Victory,

Timing is just luck. Its who is around and when. Gentoo spans the world so you do need to wait 24 hours for everyone to see your posts.

Your dmesg confirms the guesswork.

When you reoot into your new kernel, run the command
Code:
uname -a
and look at the date and time.
Check that you are actually running the new kernel. Its very easy to boot into the old kernel still.
If that happens, you will have fixed your problem but won't know it.

I compiled the kernel again but with <M> instead of <*> for the wireless card, rebooted, checked that I was running the newer kernel, loaded the module with modprobe rtl8723be and ip link showed the interface UP. I configured network with wpa_supplicant and I could ping 1.1.1.1. Thanks again for the support.
