|
|
i run emerge --update recently.
after restart, i found that the KDE start menu changed, it shows the application menu first, and the favorite become one section in the application menu.
before, when i click start, favorite list shows first, it's quick to launch favorite items. Now it takes two moves to launch favorite items. how to change it back? |

i just found that actually, the new "favorite" folder keeps expended the next time i click start. So, it's essentially the same amount of mouse click to launch an item in favorite.
so, this change shall be better then before. I should have tried more before raise a question or this sort of complain here. Thanks and sorry for trouble caused.

The most obvious change is the merge of "Application" tab and "Favorite" tab, the new design promote the application tab to first level, so that user don't have to add into favorite as before.
But, the categorization of "office, tools, development,setting..." is kind of arbitrary. Since it is arbitrary, i don't think people will ever come to an agreement on this kind of categorization, why put it into first level?
I think GNU/Linux community has more important thing to do than to "amuse" "investor" like windows did. |

with mask and emerge --update --deep @world, i downgraded kde-desktop, and the old menu goes back.
Code: | gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ cat /etc/portage/package.mask/kdeplasma
>kde-plasma/plasma-desktop-5.20.5-r1
>kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-5.20.5-r4
>kde-plasma/kdeplasma-addons-5.20.5 |
it might be better to change the start menu back somehow within kde without downgrading the package, but i don't know how.
And i am more interested in deal it with the gentoo way, it's the first time i downgrade a package. |

Don't do that. It's either *all* of Plasma 5.20 or *all* of Plasma 5.21. Besides, 5.20 will be gone soon anyway.
What did I paste the above link for? |

Thanks for pasting the link.
The reason why i switched from windows to GNU/Linux one year ago and to Gentoo is that i want to get more control on how the system works, to understand the system from source code level if i will and improve my troubleshooting skills.
But i have to focus on the necessary part and not to be distracted by unnecessary change.
The reason i choose KDE is that it seems to provide the more rich and stable function. But now, i think it may be too large to understand.
So, i can switch to something like Xfce4 for daily use, i used to treat it as a backup if KDE breaks.
I may choose from:
1.leave KDE as is,
2.downgrade everything to 5.20,
3.remove KDE .
Sometime in future, i may still need to use KDE for some feature, and it takes some time to emerge again. So, removing KDE looks like an overreact at this time although it make the system "clean".
So, i would rather find out what is *all* plasma 5.20. |

the reason why i choose to mask those three package is as follows:
Code: | gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ which plasmashell
/usr/bin/plasmashell
gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ equery belongs /usr/bin/plasmashell
* Searching for /usr/bin/plasmashell ...
kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-5.20.5-r4 (/usr/bin/plasmashell)
gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ equery depends kde-plasma/plasma-workspace
* These packages depend on kde-plasma/plasma-workspace:
kde-plasma/kdeplasma-addons-5.20.5 (>=kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-5.20.5:5)
kde-plasma/plasma-desktop-5.20.5-r1 (>=kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-5.20.5:5)
virtual/notification-daemon-0 (kde ? kde-plasma/plasma-workspace)
gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ |
I should have paste this info here last night, i was planning to write a small tutorial on this with libreoffice writer html, publish with git and paste the link here.
is kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent included in this *all* ? what can be wrong if i do not mask it?
Code: | gym@gymDeskGentoo ~ $ emerge --search kde-
