PostPosted: Thu Apr 08, 2021 4:56 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega - X will not start Reply with quote

My AMD CPU is integrated with Graphic: "AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics"

Code:
lspci | grep -i VGA
09:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Picasso (rev c8)

I try to compile kernel with:
Code:
<   > ATI Radeon"
< * > AMD GPU"

and load: "-*- Firmware loading facility"
(amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin amdgpu/picasso_k_smc.bin amdgpu/picasso_mc.bin amdgpu/picasso_me.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec2.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec.bin amdgpu/picasso_pfp.bin amdgpu/picasso_rlc.bin amdgpu/picasso_sdma1.bin amdgpu/picasso_sdma.bin amdgpu/picasso_smc.bin amdgpu/picasso_uvd.bin amdgpu/picasso_vce.bin)

But, I'm getting kernel error when compiling:
Code:
...
CC      drivers/base/firmware_loader/main.o
  UPD     drivers/base/firmware_loader/builtin/amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin.gen.S

I have exactly the same APU. I do not have access to my Gentoo machine at the moment, but I am pretty sure you should use amdgpu for VIDEO_CARDS.

Also, in my kernel configuration I left everything related to amdgpu and Radeon enabled as module (although only amdgpu module is used).

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMDGPU#Kernel

Edit: I do not see that Xorg tried loading amdgpu at all. I guess this driver is not installed/pulled by xorg-drivers and Mesa.

Code:

and load: "-*- Firmware loading facility"
(amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin amdgpu/picasso_k_smc.bin amdgpu/picasso_mc.bin amdgpu/picasso_me.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec2.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec.bin amdgpu/picasso_pfp.bin amdgpu/picasso_rlc.bin amdgpu/picasso_sdma1.bin amdgpu/picasso_sdma.bin amdgpu/picasso_smc.bin amdgpu/picasso_uvd.bin amdgpu/picasso_vce.bin)

All these binary files mentioned here are looked for at /lib/firmware.
I assume you have installed sys-kernel/linux-firmware which should provide the necessary files.
On my machine I have /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin, but for example no /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_k_smc.bin
You could try to include only the binaries that are present for picasso in /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_* instead of the full name list from the AMDGPU wiki.
Without AMDGPU compiled properly into the kernel, X won't start.

Can you double check what you have in make.conf?
VIDEO_CARDS="??????"

I change the setting to: VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu"
re-compiled: x11-base/xorg-drivers media-libs/mesa

and the X will not start. Besides, "media-libs/mesa" doesn't have a "amdgpu" driver.
I tried: VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" - X will not strat

with: VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" - X starts OK

I've noticed that building the firmware into the kernel doesn't work for this AMD-CPU: "AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics"
So I compile the kernel option as Module: "<M> AMD GPU"
and "X" is starting OK
In make.config VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" works (radeon or amdgpu - does not work.

I have a Ryzen 3350G PRO system running with firmware built into kernel (3350G has also "picasso" GPU).
VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi" (both enabled as mentioned in the wiki, according to /var/log/Xorg.0.log both drivers are loaded).
However I included only the firmware binary files starting with picasso in the kernel image, after I had error messages regarding non-existent firmware binaries during kernel compilation.
If it doesn't work for you maybe there is a difference in picasso GPU between 3350G and 3400G or some other kernel setting.

Hi,
i highly doubt that your CPU differs from any other Ryzen 5 3xxx CPU. Here are my kernel settings which works for my Ryzen 5 3550.

Code:

Graphics support  --->

[ ] /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)  ----
 -*- VGA Arbitration
 (16)  Maximum number of GPUs
 [*] Laptop Hybrid Graphics - GPU switching support
 [*] Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  --->
     ARM devices  ----
 [ ] ATI Radeon
 [*] AMD GPU
 [ ]   Enable amdgpu support for SI parts
 [ ]   Enable amdgpu support for CIK parts
 [*]   Always enable userptr write support
 [ ]   Allow GART access through debugfs
       ACP (Audio CoProcessor) Configuration  --->
       Display Engine Configuration  --->
 [*]   HSA kernel driver for AMD GPU devices

Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  --->

 --- Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
 [ ]   DRM DP AUX Interface
 [ ]   Insert extra checks and debug info into the DRM range managers
 [*]   Enable legacy fbdev support for your modesetting driver
 (100)   Overallocation of the fbdev buffer
 [ ]   Allow to specify an EDID data set instead of probing for it
 [ ]   Enable DisplayPort CEC-Tunneling-over-AUX HDMI support

Display Engine Configuration  --->
 [*] AMD DC - Enable new display engine
 [ ] Enable HDCP support in DC
 [ ] AMD DC support for Southern Islands ASICs

Also as tomtom69 said: there is no file /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_k_smc.bin

Here are mine:
Code:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 177K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_asd.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9.2K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  316 Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_gpu_info.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  18K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_me.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_mec.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_mec2.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  22K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_pfp.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  39K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_rlc.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  39K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_rlc_am4.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  17K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_sdma.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  33K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_ta.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 354K Mar 18 15:48 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/picasso_vcn.bin

Here's my list of embedded firmware (actually it is much longer as i do have a polaris 11 also):
Code:

CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="amdgpu/picasso_asd.bin amdgpu/picasso_ce.bin amdgpu/picasso_gpu_info.bin amdgpu/picasso_me.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec.bin amdgpu/picasso_mec2.bin amdgpu/picasso_pfp.bin amdgpu/picasso_rlc.bin amdgpu/picasso_rlc_am4.bin amdgpu/picasso_sdma.bin amdgpu/picasso_ta.bin amdgpu/picasso_vcn.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"

make.conf:

Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi"

Further i have to enable as use-flag:

Code:

# required by media-libs/mesa-20.2.4::gentoo[-video_cards_r200,video_cards_radeonsi,-video_cards_r100,-video_cards_r300,-video_cards_r600,-video_cards_radeon]
# required by media-libs/mesa (argument)
>=x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.103 video_cards_radeon

I think it's pretty close to the wiki.

As I've mentioned, when I enable only VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu" the startxfce4 would't work
Changing it to VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" and startxfce4 worked.

But when I run added "vmware" to VIDEO_CARDS (for virtual box)
"emerge -uDNavq world" pulled in "amdgpu and radeon"

x11-libs/libdrm requested VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeon vmware*

Definitely, both amdgpu and radeonsi should be included in VIDEO_CARDS:

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi"
