All of a sudden, this morning, I find wayland-scanner pulled in to my amd64 system as a default dependency of mesa and xorg-server, and a hard dependency of gtk+3. Why why?

(Edit: for gtk3 hard dep) no reason, it'll go away once someone has a 2nd look. bug #780561

That dependency is missing on a lot of packages so it may be getting added too fast sometimes. The rest are normal.

Thing was that wayland-scanner needs to be executed on the build machine when cross-compiling (including when building wayland itself), i.e. wayland goes in RDEPEND/DEPEND, and wayland-scanner in BDEPEND.

End of the day you're not really installing more things, it's just a bit more visible.

Is the wayland-scanner tool useful or needed for anyone not using wayland? I don't have plans to use wayland in the near future (not saying never) so this woke me up. USE= -wayland satisfied xorg-server and mesa.

Thank you asturm and Ionen for your replies.
