[smbpasswd] - Error when changing the AD password[SOLVED]

Hi,

Although my station is not in the Active Directory (AD) domain ; i should be able to change the password of a user of the AD domain with this command :

smbpasswd -r server_addr -U toto

Here is the error that i get :

Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it

NB : my station is not a Samba server. So, there is no config about : /etc/samba/smb.conf

It wants to read that file. I created an empty /etc/samba/smb.conf and it gets much further. There might be some appropriate settings you could put in there.

Yes, that is.
But i must to do it as "root".

Previously, i did created the file, but i run the command as a simple user : i got the same error.
NB : The file has rights : 0644. Although it is a Hardened Gentoo, there is no logs about the 'denied' from the smbpasswd command as a simple user. I don't like running the command as 'root', even a sudo without password.

We have Microsoft 365 and I was able to change the password from Linux as well.
First I need to find the domain controler, where "foo.bar" is our public domain:

nslookup -type=SRV _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.foo.bar

Then I was able to do

smbpasswd -U foouser -r dc01.foo.bar

with an empty user readable /etc/samba/smb.conf. Local services had the new passwort applied at once, while cloud services like outlook.office.com need some while to get the new password deployed.
