Evolution will not del.emails fr. remote IMAP server [SOLVED

I know, I know, deleting does not really delete; it just marks for deletion and you have to expunge (ctrl-E).

It doesn't work. Emails remain in my remote INBOX when they are dragged to my local IMAP server (i.e., they are copied not moved) and if I delete an email then expunge, it's still there. ls in the inbox on the remote machine still sees it, as does Trojitá.

To make it even worse, File/Empty Wastebasket brings them all back.

Version 3.38.2.

Since I cannot find any references to this problem on the WWW, it seems that I must be doing something wrong. What?

On further investigation, I cannot find an email client that works properly with my multiple IMAP accounts with multiple nested folders:

• Evolution -- as above.
  
• Geary -- uses 'tags' rather than real folders and stuffs-up when I move (drag) an email to a 'tag'.
  
• Thunderbird -- almost works, shows INBOX but reckon's there's a password error for any other folder on the server.
  
• Claws -- works but won't render HTML properly.

Whatever it was, a restart of Evolution has fixed it.
