This is a wierd problem and I'm not sure why it should be specific to my gentoo system, but it is.

I have an amd64 system with an ASUS TUF B450M-Plus Gaming motherboard. with a Gentoo 5.4.72 system. It works fine, and I like it except after it has been sitting for a long, but indeterminate time, the mouse shuts off and will not come back on until I restart with the reset button. This has happened several times now.

My system dual boots with linux Mint 20.x and is running their standard kernel for that system. As far as I can determine it has never had this situation happen, although it is difficult to verify.

My .config file follows is in the folllowing pastebin: https://pastebin.com/Rr7YrYM6

The Mint .config file is in the following pastebin: https://pastebin.com/UQxrBcFx

Same problem with 5.4.72
Instead of powerring off, I switch to VT1 (USB keyboard is still working) and run "service xdm restart" which kills the present session, kills X and then restarts both. Mouse works again for a few hours. Mate 1.24 without polkit, so an unsupported build.

When the mouse fails, does its onboard LED (if any) go dark? Does unplugging and replugging the mouse help?

Yes. The LED is off. I have experimented with plugging in another mouse and unplugging and replugging the mouse. Nothing fixes it like rebooting.

It just happened again before I read this. I'll check that next time.
Also, O still have 4.17.19 available to boot. I'll see if it happens there. I don't recall it happening with 5.4.60

This is old hardware. Sometimes kernels drop support for old hardware.

I built up this system less than a year ago.

I will try a different kernel. I think 5.9.2, because why not?

Sorry for going off topic but this made me laugh. The code of conduct's tentacles reach everywhere!

Code:
Pastebin’s SMART filters have detected potentially offensive or questionable content ahead.

That suggests the USB port has powered down. Do you have any USB powersaving features that could be disabling ports?

Great, now we can't record hard drive data on that pastebin anymore.

Mr. Hu:

I looked through the menuconfig settings and didn't see anything that looked like a power saving option. I

Tony0945 reported that his USB keyboard still worked when this happened. That is my recollection, also.

Happened again when I returned from grocery shopping. Mouse pointer moves but left and right clicks do nothing. I should have unplugged and replugged but instead shifted to VT1 where I was already logged in as root and restarted Xdm. Mouse clicks are working now.

I built a 5.9.2 system. I still have the same problem. I was able to reboot by doing a control/Alt/F1.

Bummer. I was convinced this would fix it.

Again. Mouse movement, but no clicks. Unplugged and plugged. No change.

Installing openbox to see if it behaves differently.

Openbox ran overnight. No problem in the morning. I'm thinking the problem was dbus or polkit reflated. Openbox uses neither.
