|
|
Hi,
I'm trying to setup an optimized image for our render farm and I just saw in the Install howto that gentoo-sources does not include xfs anymore.
How can I use gentoo-source and xfs at the same time? Can I run
emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
and then follow with
emerge sys-kernel/xfs-sources
Cheers,
Seb |

No, doing that will just set up two separte kernel trees. If you want a gentoo-sources kernel with xfs you'll have to use gentoo-sources-2.4.19-r7, which frankly is kind of long in the tooth. The caveat though with this kernel though, is if you use both pre-empt and XFS there are some situations where your filesystems get corrupted. |

One more thing to be careful about is that xfs-sources-2.4.19 uses a CVS snapshot of XFS. For the real tested SGI XFS 1.1, you need to stick with 2.4.18. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I use gentoo-sources 2.4.19r7 with XFS and pre_empt, and have experienced no problems at all. However I would believe it when yokem55 says that under certain circumstances you may experience corruption.
As always say, give it a go, if it fails, give it another go. |

So,
2.4.19-rc7 is not recommended because of some pre_empt (??? please enligt me as to what pre_empt is ) and because it's not the 2.4.18 SGI xfs 1-1 approved kernel. And yet, I've been told to use 2.4.19 by Intel since it's supporse to be the only one capable of using hyper-threading to it's fullest. Hmm. Should I then just download a vanilla 2.4.19 and patch it with SGI's 2.4.19 patch? Would I be missing a lot by not using a gentoo patch kernel?
As for 'millenium_psyrax' comment'st: That's usualy my state of mind, but my director doesn't seem to agree with our train of though Something about loosing money during production and not meeting dead lines because of down time...

That's another reason not to use 2.4.19-gentoo-r7: it's not really 2.4.19, despite the name. It's 2.4.18 with a bunch of patches, including the preempt you speak of, which is a patch to the scheduler that allows the kernel to be interrupted more frequently.

That would be one approach. Another would be to use the xfs-sources-2.4.19-r1 ebuild, which contains a 2.4.19 kernel, the 2.4.19 XFS snapshot patches from SGI, and some additional lostlogic patches with a URL you can see in the ebuild. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
