I dont like new Gimp 2.10.
Can I somehow install old releas -- Gimp 2.8?

Apparently gimp-2.8 is not available in the repos.
Please see this

Also I couldnt find an overlay for it.
Maybe you can buil it yourself...If you get the source.

With some effort, you can make the newer GIMP 2.10 look and feel like your more familiar 2.8. I agree with your sentiment. I think GIMP development is suffering from shiny-new-thing syndrome. Reference: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian#Don.27t_suffer_from_Shiny_New_Stuff_Syndrome

If you really want to go 2.8 and can't find alternate repository for it,
you will first have too learn how to set up a local repository & populate it: Gentoo wiki.
Then you can rebuild the 2.8 package files using Gentoo git repo.
You'll have to make sure you have all the required patch files in the appropriate ./files directory along with the ebuild.
Some required ones may not appear in the above link, as they remain active for the official ebuild, from which you will then pick them from.
Then build the manifest from within the local created ebuild directory. | Code: | | ebuild myebuild.ebuild digest |
Set your use flags in /etc/portage/package.env, if required.
Et voila! You should be ready to go: | Code: | | emerge myebuild::mylocalrepository |
That's a long way to go if you're beginning with Gentoo, despite very likely to be inevitable one day or another.
Maybe Andy Figueroa's advice is a more suitable way to go by now...

Anyone have recommendations for a package already in portage? (I like to look first before trying an overlay)
I've been getting this lately and it's needed only only by gimp:

Turn off the python flag to gimp OR unmask pygtk.

I forget what I did, but I managed to ditch the pygtk dependency a few weeks ago. And, I managed to get GIMP 2.10 reconfigured to have a reasonable and usable look and feel. Follow the link to see what I'm working with for now: https://2chronicles36.org/gimp.png

In light theme you can only see grey silhouettes instead of diagrams (e.g. working with Curves).
It's impossible to install Refocus (it's not uncluded in gimp-plugin-registry).
I suppose its quite enough to hate new Gimp! |

The ::guru overlay should be safe, as additions are moderated by Gentoo devs. |

I just noticed this today. I actually resorted to getting the old ebuilds for these into my overlay to use gimp 2.8:

I HATE gimp 2.10, not because of trivial stuff like the UI, but because of functional differences. My understanding is that a lot of what was done by gimp itself is now handled in gegl 0.4. While this stuff "works" I suppose, a lot of it has wildly different results.
One glaring example is changes to color balance. The results of this with 2.10 are very different from 2.8 and NOT good at all. Worse yet is if you select part of a layer, feather the selection, and then try to change color balance. In addition to the color balance itself not working well, the feathering seems to cause an ugly blurring around the selection that appears to be WAY larger than the number of pixels used for the feather affect. No clue what's up there but it blows royally.
I had some script fu stuff to automatically do stuff like reducing brightness of the selection by 10 or upping red by 10 etc, and the results using those in 2.10 totally sucks. For me it's not even the same tool.

You want to keep in mind that you'll also need gegl 0.2 (which has also been removed).
But the way...here's what I've been doing when I want old ebuilds for my overlay: I go to https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo and browse to the package I want. Then I use the "History" button there, and I find the commit where the version I want was removed. Then, to the right of the commit immediately before that one, I use the button marked "<>" which lets you browse the git repo at that point in history, where you can get whatever you need...the ebuild, required stuff under files etc.

| If you have a local clone, you can optimize that process by using git log -1 -- path-to-deleted-ebuild. This will show you the commit that removed it, without requiring you to browse the history of the containing directory. Once you have that commit ID, you can use git checkout commit^ -- path-to-eleted-ebuild to resurrect the ebuild. You may wish to revert the entire directory to its state in commit^ so that you can also retrieve supporting files/ objects. |
