If one runs linux kernel >= 5.6 then there's no need for suid (root) OR elogind/pam/whatever.
I run startx without any modifications to kernel/driver code to make it work. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, RX 550 - 5.8 zen kernel

Yes, 5.4* is the latest LTS which means it will have support for a long time.
It doesn't mean that 5.5, 5.6, etc are not stable. I expect the next LTS will be 5.9 (given his history of LTSs)
Edit to add: If one wanted to stay on an older release, there's a simple fix for bringing them in line with >= 5.6 as far as modesetting goes, it fixes the drm set/drop master problem _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, RX 550 - 5.8 zen kernel

i don't mean stable in the ordinary sense, I mean in the gentoo accept keyword sense https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources |
